The factory used double stick tape that were preinstalled on the trim. They peeled off the film and stuck it on.

My experience is that unless the trim remains perfectly flat and you were able to remove all of the old adhesive residue, using new double stick tape (thin) results in mixed results.

You can try reinstalling using contact cement. I would definitely stay away from superglue or anything like that.

as :superduper: said stay away from super glue, it will act as a solvent on the plastics.

You could use the double sided tape that is thick (foam like core) if there is a little bit of space behind the facia trim. If you know someone at JB get them to grab you some, I used it all the time when I worked there.

Terry is mad keen on these boxes, PM him and see what he has used.

RTV is a gasket maker material that dries like rubber but holds strong through any temperature. It is mostly used on car engines:

OEM specified. For dealership warranty requirements, ensures extended drivetrain warranty compliance. Fast-curing formula. Sensor safe, low odor, noncorrosive. Meets performance specs of OE silicone gaskets. Retains high flexibility, oil resistance properties through use of a patented adhesion system. Temperature range -65ºF to 500ºF (-54°C to 260°C) intermittent; resists auto and shop fluids and vibration.

The underlined part in the description is why I like this RTV gasket maker. Hot or cold, cleaning solution or jamming out hard bass, the parts will not seperate  .

Superglue leaves a hard crusty residue if it gets anyplace else. Plus it's almost impossible to remove if you mess up or need to remove for any reason.

Silicone (rtv) is extremely strong and any panels laminated with silicone is permanent and never can be removed. It also contaminates and makes any surface having had contact with it impossible to paint. Nothing short of gasoline can dissolve silicone.

I recommended rubber contact cement because any residue is easily removed with isopropyl and it's possible, though not easy to remove again if it should become necessary, with hairdryer maybe?

argh! i accidentaly spilt some selleys 'kwik grip' adhesive across the tuner window and it has ruined it. i think the solvent in the kwik grip instantly marked the window.
it went from being mint to looking ugly now. *sigh*

Oh well. I DID try to warn you to use contact cement if at all possible. It's really the safest thing next to tape.

But all is not lost. Depending upon how bad it is, you can most likely fix it.

Sand out the mess (after it's fully cured) if necessary. Go progressively finer until it's like a haze. Then use 3M paint rubbing compound (fast) or use fine acrylic polish (slower) to restore the clarity to it. It takes a lot of elbow grease but works. I suggest getting one of those 3M headlamp polishing kits for use with your portable drill. Also, make sure you use duct tape (or other strong tape) and cover the areas you don't want polished before starting.

yep, it looks like sanding will get it off. just that sinking feeling you get when something goes wrong with a box. you can't match it!
the guy at the hardware store was waaaaaay off with his advice. next time i will listen to you guys.

Double sided works wonders too. See I had to clean all glue from sony decal, then iron out to flatten... Then just use double sided tape and perfect  Good Luck
