Depends. Some sound great, some not so great, depending on the revisions. I personally love my 777. It has a very solid, double deck with great features, easy to work on, a modder's dream to build on & great looks. I think it is WAY under-rated by members here & I scratch my head when some say it's not worth the money spent. I turned mine into a DISCO Destroyer & loaded 2 OHM BOSE woofers into it with no modification needed to the AMP circuits. Now she pounds out 45w, same IC's as the C-100 & 2-OHM capable with ease.

The belts are relatively easy to change too & the cabinet has real working horns & bass waveguides to boost bass out put by about 3db vs a flat face, not to mention the independent BASS controls for a wide range of sound settings...

That being said this blaster is for parking on the patio & filling a room with sound. It sounds best when standing 4-5 feet back or more from it, not on your shoulder, walking around. The crossvers are 4.7uF & could use better 6.7uf Polyester Film caps for a more flat & smooth response.

What's not to love about that?

All depends on what you want a 777 for. For display purposes, the 777 is an essential inclusion to any serious Boombox collection. It's an icon of old school, early eighties tech. So for looks alone, they have to be in the top 5 boxes to have.

For sound quality, this model Sharp is like many other Sharp machines - very ordinary sounding in unmodded form.
Sure, you can swap out all the main drivers, the tweeters and capacitors etc and turn it into something other than a GF-777 but most collectors prefer the real thing.

I think I want it for both mainly for display but also sometimes to take it out and listen to I know it is all original I am buying it off the original owner who has had it since he purchased it in 1985

Nice! One owner boxes are always cool with a full history of the box thrown in for free!

Go for it.

Styling-wise, I'm not a big fan, which is why I've never spent the $600-800 to get one. I just don't like how the "subs" look smaller than the outer speakers, because of the way they're set back in the case. They aren't true subs anyway, and they distort easily. Also I think it needs more color, it's just gray and silver. But that is just my opinion. A box is worth whatever someone decides it's worth, if it is personal to them.

Most boxes have issues with the audio control boards, dirty pots and bad capacitors, needs lubrication, thorough cleaning and all. One Sharp GF 777 sounds excellent but the other one I have was not that good. One Sony CFS99 sounded awesome when the other one was not. One of my M70s sounds the best and the other two are just okay. The list goes on and on...

If you push a unit that has issues, sound will be all distorted and that has nothing to do with that model.

Members who got their M70 sliders serviced by Superduper Norm says they cannot believe how great it sounds now.

Speakers and cross over upgrades makes a lot of difference.

Not all these 30+ old grail sound good now. Some needs capacitor replacements, new belts, audio board serviced and speaker upgrades.

I would say GF777 is one of the best boomboxes to buy but don't expect all will sound the same after all these years. I have one someone kept in a cabinet for years in a climate controlled environment. That one sounds the best! I didn't even change the belts on it. It still looks like new.

I hope this one is all good.. It has not been used in 23 years..,it's been in a closet.. Just missing the tuner knob..

Good luck with your purchase! Go for it! You will love it! Make sure the seller packs it so well. This box is very vulnerable to even slight impact from the sides.

I like my 777z

I know allot of people either have a higher expectation or don't realize the subs are not isolated. 1981 open box tech, in that regard it does OK.

Plus, not having one on the shelf and calling yourself a collector ...REALLY??? :hmmm:

The first thing we all do is cleaning the box after getting it. The woofer dust caps are very very thin and so be extra careful. When you work on cleaning it be careful not to use any harsh solvents on the box especially on the front control panel areas. Use a damp microfiber cloth and wipe off gently. I use only pledge for cleaning and careful even using windex. Use only microfiber cloth. I am sure you know it all. I have done mistakes in the past. Just wanted remind not to run in simple mistakes and gets disappointed.

Cool man,

Well, there is a lot of real estate on that box for a graffiti project. Look into some of those threads regarding mod's if you're not keeping it stock. Lots of members doing HOT upgrades to this box. I haven't actually heard any, but the reviews sound promising!
