Sharp 555 - Can you help me get the old girl running?

Hi guys,

Grab a coffee, long thread ahead!

I joined the forum last week after sourcing a Sharp 555 sold as 'excellent condition'. That may have been the case although when Hermes delivered it, she looked like she had taken a proper kicking. Whether Hermes added loads of broken plastic inside, who knows! So... I joined this group and met a really great fellow Yorkshire man!

The radio worked on this one, lets call it Hermes unit although tapes 100% not. The sound too was awful, turn the volume up and you are met with 80s characters snap, crackle and pop!

I then spent about two hours trying to find aerials for the Hermes unit and got very confused. Thinking it needed to be stripped down I very carefully undid it and to be honest she was not too bad inside. I watched a few YouTube videos and thought best thing here is to get some belts.

Things then went a bit wonky! I thought the best way to clean the tape doors after removal and after some friendly advice was to give them a good wash. Transpires either lacquer or possible staining came off so I panicked and stopped.

Saturday morning then comes and I find another unit. This one is truly mint! Collected from Aintree. Let's call this one Aintree! Now Aintree is ace, has a wiring diagram (probably best to point out I am not very technical at all), cables and the tapes work!! Well sort of... they play and then just STOP!

In between all this I was advised a QT aerial would match mine. I bought a unit - aerial is amazing! It is though about 30% too long!

So....

My passion for this is I was born in '74. Breakdancing, BMX, Boomboxes... they were all my things! I got into house music in 1990 and have thousands of records. I do have a decent Nakamichi to play tapes (actually on here do you guys call them cassettes). I wanted a boombox to feel that 80s connection. Money would not stretch to the ones you guys have but maybe one day! In the interim my plan is this...

Get Aintree working - needs 1 aerial and advice on how to fix the 'stopped tape'

Sell Hermes - it's a great unit but it is way beyond my technical repair capablity

Sell the QT250 - I am assuming a mint condition aerial would help someone out?

Can anyone help or advise? I have looked through the forum and found a few threads, none exactly what I need but maybe my thread will help someone else out! :)

CAPS NOT SHOUTING FOR IMAGE TITLES:

I have found out from a parts manual that my antennas are two of these:

FM/ SW Telescopic Aerial QANTR0111afzz

Only thing that shows up in Google are links to these in manuals. Any help very appreciated!

Sometimes units share identical aeriels but the notion of finding replacements easily is sadly not valid.
Often people get an approximate size and replace both if the unit has two.

Thanks docs, I wondered if there was a type I could keep my eyes open for. It seems to be a problem for a lot of people, thought some enterprising person might have started selling them! :)

Will keep looking and reading up. It's annoying as one is perfect! :)

Not sure on the protocol of new threads so thought would continue on here. Think I need to start scoring points though to allow me access to the full site (buying and selling)... well buying in my case.

My two units need the following:

4 Antennas & 4 Belt kits and 4 rubber wheels....

BELTS

Thanks to Fatdog post on belts:

I know I need - FRW8.5, SCQ6.7 and SCX8.0

From another post I found Bob on eBay who is a belts guy. (eBay user ID 40246). Bob is amazing... he just needs the dimensions. I know from shattered red belt found in the Hermes one I am looking for 4mm. Had a look on Russel Industries but cannot match Fatbob's data to any kit sizes:

There is a guy in Russia selling the kits for about £50 which I guess would be the option to buy one, measure and then share with people on here what you need. I suspect Bob has them, I just don't know what I need.

RUBBER WHEELS (Are these captsans)

crazygamer
posted this exact problem

I think we may be able to clean up two wheels and I managed to source these on eBay for the other 2 for £15.95

Someone helping crazygamer called James jimmyjimmy19702010 shared this link to make your own.

So I think should be ok for wheels

ANTENNAS

As mentioned in the thread above I bought a QT to harvest the antenna, it's mint condition - just no use to me if helps anyone? Guess when I am allowed in Buy and Sell I can see if anyone needs it.

This morning I contacted these guys via eBay (again another post on here)

Suspect the language is all wrong but will let you know what they say:

  1. 5 sections
  2. 80cm from tip to exposed part of the stereo (not base of antenna)
  3. The end part that connects to the long part is 3.5cm
  4. Diameter of the antenna is 9mm
  5. Collapsed length - tip to end is 21.5cm
Another antenna post talks about Nedis - not messaged them yet as trying to see how far I get and what I actually need:

Amazon have hundreds of the things and could be a good option. Looking at that today. I just don't think they have the exact one I need.

Anyway.... that's me....

The Hermes (wrecked one) I took the mechanism out Saturday and the perished red belt is welded on it seems. Think belts will sort me there. The Aintree one (mint but no working decks) could be an option as I don't think the belts have snapped. If that is the case I can measure them and...

Bob's your uncle (or at least Bob is a supplier of belts).

Hope this helps someone in the future! Complex world to a man that does not electrical, technical or seemingly much!

Ok so I now have the good belts off - will share photos later. Made a video of me dismantling it all!

Excellent, a fellow Yorkshireman pulling 555s apart!

Check the condition of the little rubber drive tyres on the capstans, they have an unpleasant tendency to degenerate into a sort of black gooey slime which then gets everywhere.

It's a fiddly and messy job, but they can be cleaned of goo and the tyres replaced with some pieces of silicone hose.
