Hi guys,
Grab a coffee, long thread ahead!
I joined the forum last week after sourcing a Sharp 555 sold as 'excellent condition'. That may have been the case although when Hermes delivered it, she looked like she had taken a proper kicking. Whether Hermes added loads of broken plastic inside, who knows! So... I joined this group and met a really great fellow Yorkshire man!
The radio worked on this one, lets call it Hermes unit although tapes 100% not. The sound too was awful, turn the volume up and you are met with 80s characters snap, crackle and pop!
I then spent about two hours trying to find aerials for the Hermes unit and got very confused. Thinking it needed to be stripped down I very carefully undid it and to be honest she was not too bad inside. I watched a few YouTube videos and thought best thing here is to get some belts.
Things then went a bit wonky! I thought the best way to clean the tape doors after removal and after some friendly advice was to give them a good wash. Transpires either lacquer or possible staining came off so I panicked and stopped.
Saturday morning then comes and I find another unit. This one is truly mint! Collected from Aintree. Let's call this one Aintree! Now Aintree is ace, has a wiring diagram (probably best to point out I am not very technical at all), cables and the tapes work!! Well sort of... they play and then just STOP!
In between all this I was advised a QT aerial would match mine. I bought a unit - aerial is amazing! It is though about 30% too long!
So....
My passion for this is I was born in '74. Breakdancing, BMX, Boomboxes... they were all my things! I got into house music in 1990 and have thousands of records. I do have a decent Nakamichi to play tapes (actually on here do you guys call them cassettes). I wanted a boombox to feel that 80s connection. Money would not stretch to the ones you guys have but maybe one day! In the interim my plan is this...
Get Aintree working - needs 1 aerial and advice on how to fix the 'stopped tape'
Sell Hermes - it's a great unit but it is way beyond my technical repair capablity
Sell the QT250 - I am assuming a mint condition aerial would help someone out?
Can anyone help or advise? I have looked through the forum and found a few threads, none exactly what I need but maybe my thread will help someone else out!
CAPS NOT SHOUTING FOR IMAGE TITLES:
THIS SHOWS THE QT AERIAL ON TOP OF AINTREE - ITS A LONG ONE (THAT'S WHAT SHE SAID)
HERE IS HERMES - ALL THE PARTS ARE IN LABELLED ENVELOPES. I AM SLOWLY CLEANING UP ALL THE GRIME ON IT
AINTREE'S MANUALS AND WIRING DIAGRAMS! WILL GET THEM ALL SCANNED AND PDF IN CASE HELPS A BROTHER OUT
HERE IS AINTREE - HOT LOOKING BOOMBOX BUSINESS
SNEAKY SIDE SHOT
THE QT WITH THE AERIAL PUT BACK
I am very new to this but anything you can help with would be ace!
