Has anyone had success purchasing one of the many posted boomboxes from China? The most active seller (under several usernames - same photo back drop.. Cmon!) appears to have easy access to some serious boxes! I finally took a chance, stepped outta my JVC addiction, and bought a Sharp 676 Dual Cassette monster.
Well - he charges serious money for China Expedited Shipping. Great thing iz I received the box in 1 week! However - I was bummed - the condition was poor, decks didn't work, shortwave dead... I spent 6 hrs fixing this box.. Now, after oil, lube, solder, and plenty o' deoxit - she screams!
The guy seems honest enough, but he definately didn't test this box.
Anyone had better experiences with this fellow.. I don't wanna slam 'em - but, my box was not as described.

Cheers

My guess is..... that's gonna be a common experience.

Good thing you were able to fix it yourself. Someone without the technical and mechanical aptitude to do what you did would be up the creek.

There are a few sellers in China that are good. The best two in my opinion are PeppinHK and Henry Tai. Peppin is a member at S2G and Henry is at S2G and here. There's one other seller who has 100% feedback, but I can't recall his ID at the moment.

Consider yourself lucky. There are many, many horror stories involving boomboxes and China.

Oh, and I believe that's a 767 - not a 676. ;-)

:agree: You are the exception, most don't have the skills, time, money, desire, patience, etc...
Then again when you buy something that needs this kind of work but wasn't desribed so that is completely wrong irregardless of your ability or willingness to fix it. That also probably means the buyer paid way to much for the box. :annoyed:

I think it's important to make a distinction between Hong Kong (Henry and Peppin) and mainland China. While the mainland is growing by leaps and bounds, much of China is still sparse rural areas with lots of villages. Hong Kong, of course, is about as developed and Urban as they come. It wasn't until about a decade ago that Hong Kong was subject to British rule so laws against copyright and patent infrigements were more greatly enforced than in China where such laws were practically non-existent, or at least, not enforced. The counterfeiting trade of China probably played a great part of what fueled their economy. The technology needed to peform many of those same counterfeiting endeavors has allowed them to grow to where China now has the ability to do some of their own R&D and actual product development. Needless to say, attitudes and such can be quite different between China and HongKong.

Thanks for the responses!
This guy has 100% feedback... He sells a ton of Sharp & Sanyo boxes. I took a calculated chance.. He did offer to refund a little $. I took him up on that.
Funny - the Sharps are easy to take apart. JVC's are a nightmare!
This transaction was from Mainland China. Plus - the guy's friendly.. no weirdness. He sells so many boxes, he either forgot to test this one, or mixed up the description. Yeah - I'm still bummed, but I got this mutha up and runnin'.

I've heard the partial refund story enough with the chinese sellers to wonder if they don't conduct their auctions with the intent of refunding some $$$'s if they are called on the condition. :hmmm:

Glad you got it worked out and all is okay now, bottom line is you need to be satisfied with your purchase.

It seems I always have to remind people of the distinction between Hong Kong and China, so I'm glad you explained that.

You added much more detail tho.

While we are on the subject why is it so much cheaper to ship from
hong kong than from china? Pippens shipping is under 100 for most boxes but china can run 1-200.

Read carefully. Peppin's shipping quotes sea mail. That could take 4 to 8 weeks. Maybe more if it gets held up in Customs. Chinese sellers don't have a seamail option (not nearly as many ports as HK which is an island). So you are paying airmail.

Here's she is... Troubles were no radio, dead line in, one cassette was stuck, all pots scratchy. All repaired & delivering that bass I crave.

Now I understand why it's a 676!!! Its the super-rare double-decks-on-the-right-side SHARP!!!
Jk David, you just need to flip the picture horizontally! ;-)

Yep,
the pic is backwards - i took it using mac photobooth. Could have changed it - too lazy. Sorry - but that aside, it really cranks. The cassette recording really sounds amazing!

david --very glad that you had the time and the big talent to fix all the huge important
defects -- that were not disclosed in the listing --

so - even though the seller may be friendly and offered a refund --

the bottom line is that
it seems much too risky to get these china grails

agree ????
:-) :-)

Yep - live and learn & somtimes get burned.

I just scored 2 broken JVC's (m70 and 838). I'm gonna try & get 'em up and running. If I can't get one or the other operating, I'm thinking about creating a hybrid. I'll join the 838 and M70 back to back. They may not fit, but I'll make it work.

Its too bad though to hear about the reliability of China ebay items. There are some tempting boxes on there.

But with my skills currently limited to what I can do with a q-tip and some alcohol, I think I will definately pass on those.
