Got this from Epay a cheap BIN, described as 'this needs some tlc turns on and radio works fine unable to test tape dont have one some of the screws on back have rust on them and tape buttons have got marks on them chrome kind of rust like you get on copper selling as seen spares or repairs' and they weren't wrong about needs some tlc, but I think the has some rust was a bit of an understatement.
Ok a quick assessment reveals the following:
Very very dirty.
Has had a major battery leak.
Green corrosion on all controls (Probably all caused by the battery leak)
Cassette needs belts.
One aerial missing (Already replaced this)
The rear connection panels very dirty and rusty.
Does work ok on radio but all switches needed lots of cleaner.
On the plus side it works and has no major physical damage with only minor edge wear.
Here's some pictures as it arrived, as which point most people would have returned it or binned it.
I'm foolish and intend to fully restore it :hmmm:

Had to take the chassis out to do something about the corroded cassette keys.

I have now completely taken it apart to do the belts, it may never go back together, so many wires, we'll see.
Here's a few pics of it now, I take of photos during the resto and do a full post when finished.

That cleaned up real nice!
I have one one the way, it looks very daunting to work on.

I agree it does look quite daunting, but I found with main board lifted up as in the last photo I could get the capstan flywheel back plate off, and with a bit of patience change the belts.
I have changed the belts but I don't really want to have to do this more than once, so before I start reassembly what size belts has anyone else used that worked well?

Thanks for all the encouraging comments, I did have seconds thoughts when I first saw it, but the more I do the better I feel about and it's starting to look quite nice.

done a couple of these box's after doin belts which is hard they are worth it even every one i have had has lots of static and shorts which you just don't seems to fix!!! I'm working on the baby version at the mo the 9996l which has the same lay out!!!! most important is the right flat belt it just has to be the right width 3mm min!! otherwise it'll slip off after a while!! I found cable tying all wires and making them root proberly is the best way other wise the back is hard to get on !! rooting of all wire's has to be in the original position is a must no short cuts with this box!!! But once fixed it is awsome not so much bass as the M70 but far better overal sound a real class act!!! good luck on you restro

mrp32: Thanks for that last picture!! Mine had two broken wires and found where they go because of that close-up shot of the circuit board. Major life saver!!! :smooch:

Just for the record, I replaced the flat belt in my 9998 with a belt from a Panasonic DT680 - works great, doesn't slip off and plays at the right speed.

Getting the old deteriorated belt off the motor was a pain though, it had turned to goo!
