Hi Guys,

A while back, I bought a 'nice' Ebay Sanyo M9998K for $100 + $40 shipping. I knew it had a rotten battery compartment and the deck needed belts but cosmetically it looked o.k and the amp worked and the tuner was good on all bands.

After it arrived, I excitedly spent hours and hours cleaning the exterior and I thought it came up pretty nicely. :w00t: Life was good and I was super stoked to have an M9998K and then, a few days later I lost the right channel. No amount of switch cleaning etc could fix the issue so I assumed the worst. The next day I lost almost all the functions with only the deck motor and the battery level VU meter working.  So I parked the Sanyo in the workshop, looking at it every now and then thinking, "Man that's a nice looking unit - pity it doesn't actually produce sound anymore". ;-)

Fast forward to last week, Scotty won an M9998K locally from Ebay for a good price. Upon collection, the weirdo seller wouldn't even let Scott plug the unit it to test! It was a super nice unit cosmetically and for the price, he took the risk and paid the man.

After doing a quick home test, he found the left channel was strong but the right channel was very low. After cleaning the pots etc, no increase in the right channel output could be achieved. Scotty then pulled the chassis and swapped it for a healthy 9998K chassis internals he already had and now he had a working M9998K guts in the nice, new clean outer casing.

Now this is the point where Scotty come to my rescue again! Knowing my M9998K was dead, he gave me his newly acquired chassis for either parts or a fix up project and also gave me his old, outer front and rear casing.

I must admit, I didn't have high hopes for a successful repair of the Sanyo but I loaded up the chassis into the outer casing and did a quick test - yep, no right channel! So I pulled the chassis and got to work unplugging, spray switch cleaning and re-attaching almost every internal connector. I also re-flowed any suspect looking solder joints and then did another clean of the pots etc and after testing with the multi-meter, I found some pots (balance and volume) were still giving me erratic readings. :hmmm:

After extensive cleaning etc of these pots plus literally hundreds of turns back and forth, I was about to switch out the entire pots panel for my spare unit and then the right channel started to come to life - not all at once, just a 'slow increase' in output over a period of around 20 more minutes of knob turning! After a few hours or use, both channels were now balanced. I took it to work the next day (today) and it sounded fantastic!

The deck has a non-functioning i.e. 'loose' play key so I will have to pull the deck at some stage - that is a job I'm not looking forward to! :hmmm:

The front instrument panel is very worn and will be replaced with my nicer spare panel when I next pull the chassis.

I'd like to thank Scotty for kindly providing the internals and also 'Nz Boom' for the spare battery terminals and control knobs that helped me complete the first part of the restoration.

I love the sound of the M9998K - very balanced bass and treble and the build quality of this Sanyo is first class!
Thanks guys,

James.... :-)

looks nice mate
Thanks mate. Those control knobs you provided cleaned up beautifully and look great compared with my clean but very pitted originals. Got to have nice chrome on a black box!!

The battery terminals were in excellent condition too so thanks again.

James... ;-)
