Bought one these a while back as a resto project, but it had lots of cosmetic issues and some intermittent electrical problems that I couldn't sort, so left it to be contined at a later date.
Found this this one on Ebay with a reasonable start price so bid that and left it, no one else bid, strange, so won it for the start price. It arrived very well packed and was as described just needing a very good clean and the belts replacing.
So belts now replaced and the deck working perfectly, spent a day cleaning it, very pleased with the result, now probably one of the nicest I've seen for while and at a bargain price.
If anyone has been thinking about doing their belts, but have been put off by the amount of wiring, it's not that difficult, I took plenty pictures so might do a post.
I had to rob some internal parts for the deck from my resto box to get this one 100%, so glad I had it, it's still got got potential though if I can get the parts I used.
So here's the finished result.

Here's one picture of the new belts fitted, as you can see not that much has to be removed.

I,m sure cassette door label is one of Fatdogs? Here's picture without it using the window from the parts box.

Those mic holders and mics are removable and they are not custom.
I believe this model and a few other Sanyo models use these mics.
What a wonderful example! Big congrats to you, these are great units!
And nice size for carrying about.

It is 26cm long, very heavy almost 9 kg
The microphone holders are also used by the 9994, they simply slide into slots on the side of the box

easily one of the best out there. congrats
skippy wanted my clairtone 7980 for his 9998....if i had two of them i would have traded without hesitation
i would trade multiple boxes for a 9998....and most of the ones on my short list...

As already mentioned quite a few Sanyos came with mics including the M9998, so here's some pictures of the mounting point on the box and some better pictures of the mics.

Thanks for all the nice comments, this really is a nice example of this box and I'm very pleased with it now that it's 100% working.
And as redbenjoe said " imho =9998=among the worlds best " and I would have to agree, not the loudest or a bass monster but I think the overall sound quality is superb.
