Sanyo JA/JT-222 system tuner amplifier above awesome sound M9998K
The Sanyo M9998LU (black dome woofer) ghetto blaster has an awesome sound but appears to be based on the electronics of an earlier Sanyo music center, M9998K chrome dome above. Certainly collector's items, once heard, these sets will be bought by almost anyone keen on real music from cassette or FM radio. But they'd be greedy with batteries and work off the mains, today they have little practical value unless on public display in a Museum. 12 watts peak x 2, S/N ratio: 50dB Dolby out, 59dB Dolby in, MM phono 3mv/50kohm, ceramic/line 300mv/1Mohm, 15volt supply, Weight 9Kg, couple of Short Wave bands. Output for 4-8ohm Ext. speakers. Inputs for MICs of the small jack type. Transformed by their Loudness and 'Stereo Wide' switches, without which they don't sound good at all, bass from these is not the most detailed compared to large speakers, as if the bass excavator and wide lose some of the information although still sensational, you'll know with their polypropylene domes, these are 'rich' speakers, but 'rich' speakers often have very high sensitivity, up to 101dB for 1 watt at 1 meter, meaning loud or effortless sound!

The Sanyo M9998K was sold in different outlets from the M9996K, seen in places like Macy's. Not much info can be offered on the M9996K, save that on price they didn't sell too well. The back panel has a number or RCA sockets and there are LED meters with the same bands as the M9998K. Note the row of buttons for the AMSS or Auto Music System Select, a refinement of the system seen on the black M9998 possibly explaining why the 9996 was in the more 'grown-up' stores. A.M.S.S. was introduced first to car audio and a popular feature of SHARP portables, though SHARP sound quality was not the best available. The M9996 retains the at-the-side key controls for AMSS seen on the M9998. The M9998 and M9996 are not of the type that allow the speakers to be separated from the unit, when Sanyo introduced their later series the C3, C5 and C7 this was possible, but the old 1970s quality was gone one piece systems had far superior sound quality. Sanyo M-X920U, lies between the M9998, M9996K and M9994K, single piece boomboxes, a real addictive 'late 1970s Japanese' sound! Google Sanyo M7900 and M-X920F...

The Sanyo M9994K just rocks, like the 1979 M9998 and MX-920U! The metal mesh over the speakers protects them from damage and makes sound spread out as seen in Yamaha NS1000M above. Possible inputs for I-pod etc, details needing checked with the seller, main selling point is appearance and past prestige status, the disadvantage, rubber belt cassette deck, rubber belts of various sizes may be bought in packs, repair may not be easy depending how buried in the machine belts turn out to be or if they can be reached. It is not recommended to remove the dial scale cord to free any part, unless used to such cords as tension depends on the number of turns on all the parts at a point you note on the dial scale before removing the cord!
