Hi fellas and fellarinos, this is my first post here! I am restoring a Sanyo M9815K Boombox for my neighbor but I can't find any info on it like the service manual? SW1, SW2, AM, and FM are now working but not the tape player? The belt has been replaced it now rewinds and fast forwards but the capstan doesn't turn when the play button is pushed? Is there an exploded view of this tape mechanism I could view or download from somewhere so I can work out what's going on with it? Any help will be greatly appreciated.

This model is not popular. You must send here some photos ot tape mechanism, to see what happen.

It's just a generic tape mechanism? There is a leaf spring for the motor that works, as I said everything works but for the play button when pressed the hub doesn't turn to turn the tape. The capstan or spindle turns but it doesn't turn the rubber roller because it won't reach that far?

If the capstan is not touching the pinch roller (highlighted red) then pause could be stuck engaged on. If it isn’t pause, then the mech has some hardened grease somewhere, stopping the heads go up far enough to fully engage, would need a overhaul.

Typically if the right hand take up spool (highlighted yellow) is not turning this is usually down to a broken gear or tyres not gripping. You need to see the front of the deck to see how that spool turns. But in this case, is likely not turning because the pinch roller isn't turning so you need to find out why the heads aren’t engaging.

Hmmm, I can't see any broken cogs or teeth, nor hardened grease? That was the first thing I looked for! When play is pressed the main head will rise up Ok except that the pinch roller doesn't quite pinch. If I press play then pause, that seems to be working properly, dropping the pinch roller away from the capstan. Is there anything I can spray the mechanism with to soften any hardened grease?

Have you manually checked moving the head plate upwards? See if it reaches where it should?
Is the pinch roller spring out of shape? Try removing the pinch roller bracket, could be the spring is out of shape and not fully releasing?
You cant do this with it in the unit, you need the front of the boomer out of the way.

That spring looks alright, just a tiny bit of surface rust on the ''axle'' of the pinch roller bracket. I've sprayed DeOxit on anything that looks suss. It seems that the head isn't rising up enough so I'm going to take the tape player mechanism out to get a better look at things and get back to you. Thanks for these ideas to try?

Observe the belts as best you can while in play mode to make sure the main capstan belt isn’t slipping.

I noticed a spring wasn't connected properly underneath the flywheel to the left in the photo so I lifted the loose end over another spring/wire ''L'' shaped thing to the right of it which was the only anchor point I could see? So now the heads close completely, I put it all back together and now the tape player is working great!!! Is there a place where I can buy a pinch roller from? Are they all a standard size because I have a Pioneer CT-W910R that needs its pinch rollers replaced as well? Thanks again for the advice and suggestions Fellas, it all helps.

Measure the diameter, thickness and hole diameter of the pinch roller and check on Ebay. In most cases you will find those types of pinch rollers available like in a set or 2 or 4 like that. It is not that expensive even. Good luck!

When you search on eBay use those measurements and search. Like 7mm X 5mm X 2mm pinch roller

Yes Royce.
I think the standard sizes for boomboxes are 12.5mm to 13.5mm but some have wider spindles too so be sure to buy a selection to cover bases.

Thanks again, Fellas! I had a look on eBay and they don't cost much at all? So I'll get a selection, I have a Phillips AZ-2025 Boombox so I will replace the pinch roller on that too. It might be a good idea to have a Sticky where people can enter the size of pinch rollers they used on different models instead of having to pull the mechanism first?
