Can anyone give me an idea of how to get the inside belt on? I am uncertain because the stem of the capstan goes into the wheel. What needs to be taken apart to get a belt looped around the pulley? 53B05043-CBB4-4F62-A7C1-C123477FE7E1.jpeg

What us called the back plate of the deck.
With deck faced down, what you should be looking at is a metal plate which holds the flywheel in place. There are often screws in each sides to remove for the plate to be lifted.

I have a 920 here due for servicing. Not sure if the same mechanism as I haven`t had it apart at this point. If you are new to this, grab an older lesser value box needing belts and practice on lower units before attempting a repair on a grail. Start small and build up. Plenty here can help you in the right context. If able to access the 920 in the next week, and mechanism looks the same, will post a video or 2.

Great! Thank you. I was able to change the 2 belts in there, the flat wide one coming from the motor and the other one as well. I changed the tape counting belt as well. A few things came of it….stop functions, fast forward and rewind both function, but I cannot get play to engage. I’ve tried to hold play and manually turn the flywheel. Also, the head mechanism will lift manually.

Upon inspection I noticed the following:

-play button return is missing one s This doesn’t seem to effect anything

-there seems to be a missing spring here at the area on the left above the record button. I believe it’s to engage or disengage the safety tab that goes into a full studio cassette to prevent accidental recording over.

-the head seems to be bent inward. Can you confirm the the head should be flat/90 degrees?

please let me know what I can do to get play working. FF and RW seem to work perfectly smooth. Thank you!

Thank you! Yes, I have some experience with Boombox cassette decks. I fixed a Sanyo 650 about 20 months ago with the help of the forum. That one has a cracked circuit board and a bunch of other issues. This one seems more intact. I just cannot get play to engage even after changing the belts and manually turning the flywheel clockwise, counterclockwise and with and without depressing the play button.

I'm pretty sure the play function trigger micro switch is broken. That is the main cause for play not to engage.

I posted pictures of that micro switch in this thread below:

Is the head assembly moving upwards into place against the tape when you press play?
That could cause the faint audio, if the head's too far away from the tape.
Great insight. The play function lifts the head upwards towards the cassette. Yes.

these springs are not always to hold the head tight to the tape sometimes they are used as a return spring for the play fast Forward rewind functions when you press stop it's what springs everything back.

in most cases on these full logic or soft touch decks it's belt tension that keeps playing head in position not spring tension. now in the stop function or the play function or other functions fail to stop or the buttons fail to return that's because of spring tension. in cases where belt tension is lost it binds up the gear mechanism where everything's stuck in the last position it was when the belt went bad but that's belt tension.
