So I managed to find a source for a stylus for my C20 wild find. I was really keen to get the record deck part of this working as its the main reason i got it. So with a little tinkering, a new stylus and lots of swearing its finally up and running! Plays beautifully and sounds great. I have yet to do any detail cleaning work and sort the speakers out but here she is:

Now i need to open up the speakers to get the old foam you can see out of the way. It looks like this foam goes in front of the speakers to make them look square when in fact they are regular round ones. What should i do here?
Do i put new foam in place? What foam do i use so i dont lose too much sound?
Or do i take the foam out altogether?

Any advice from the masters?

Nice one, very nice indeed! I wouldn't mind one of those myself!

I'd re-foam it as per the original spec. If you have a 'Boyes' shop nearby you may find some foam there as they tend to stock a range of thicknesses in/close to the Haberdashery Dept. Foam is always available on eBay whether it be flat or 'egg crate'.

If I were truly stuck for suitable foam I'd consider a trip to a charity shop for a donated, heavily padded, photo album or some such and rip the covers off for the inner foam as a last resort.

I think the key is the density: too thick and it'll do the sound no favours and too thin, it may not sit right.

As an afterthought, I think the foam would look so much better in black.

Just my pennyworth.

Nice score. There are threads on square speaker restoration.

Is this unit really heavy? Is it something you can carry around?

That model weighs 30lbs so doubtful you would lug it around like a mini but it does accept batteries. Additional info about it can be found on wikiboombox (remember that site?, lol). Interesting version you have there, the North American version has a slightly different color theme but the biggest cosmetic change I can see is that the one displayed here has a standard clear cassette door while the N American version has a solid silver colored door with an interesting round clear "porthole" in the center.

Yep, here is more info: http://www.wikiboombox.com/tiki-index.php?page=Sanyo+C20

Yeah, I guess 30lbs would slow you down a bit. :-/

I bet it has a nice warm sound with that turn table spinning!

The speakers aren't square though bro they are cunningly disguised round ones !

And yeah it is ridiculously heavy.

Thanks Mom, I have no issue sourcing the foam, this is more what i was getting at above. As you say if the foam is to dense it'll dampen the sound too much, I'm surprised they ever put foam in front of the speakers in the first place, cant of done the sound any good. Ho hum i'll have a look about.

It does sound really nice so I'm very happy with it but I think i have lots of work ahead!
