Had a friend who also collects boomboxes come to my house yesterday
to talk about wants and needs for our collections and also to check out what i was
hording away from the rest of the world

In all my finds one radio i had not had the luck of finding was a Sanyo 9996, the baby to the
desirable (to some of us) 9998

My friend, who has started to get quite a nice boombox collection going of his own, happened to be
lucky enough to secure 2 :w00t: so a trade was made :-D

Truth be known i was never really sure of the 9996, it always seemed to me to be a cheaper, lesser
copy of the 9998 and one i wasnt going to fight over on Epay and end up paying top $$$

.....but now i have definately changed my mind.

This really is a great radio. Looks good, sounds great, nice and loud and clear. And the green dial light
and LED meters looks fantastic (sorry about the grainy pic bellow)
Not to mention that as rare as the 9998 seems, i believe the 9996 to be even less seen !

It does have line-in but this is for recording only so play and record have to be operated for line-in to
work, but like its bigger brother it has 2 settings on phono for ceramic or MM cartridge and the
ceramic works perfect as a line-in.
I have only ever known Sanyo to have this feature ?? if so congrats to them on an excellent factory
option

Havent yet finished a final detail but wanted to show off my new addition.

Looks great in fact it looks minty good, the green dial light is an awesome touch.
I agree with you that doesn't look as substantial as the 9998 so I always wondered how it compared too. :hmmm:

MB i think thats the downfall for this radio, being compared to the 9998.
On its own it actually is a fantastic radio, very heavy for its size and good
feel to the build quality.
This one will be a keeper for me

Very nice pick up, AZA.

Never seen any blaster with the antenna mounted like that.

Interesting design choice, to say the least, from Sanyo.

Rock On.

Wow, that is a cool looking box. And it has the sweet AMSS key from the 9998.

I don't think you should worry about being overshadowed by the 9998. I have a 9998K, and I expected it to be more powerful for a box that weighs 19 lbs without batteries. It doesn't have much bass until you really crank it. But that is just my personal opinion ---- maybe there's something wrong with mine. Tape deck is awesome though, especially for 1978. (see the cool backlight in my avatar).

I like this feature too, its always nice to have a feature thats slightly different from
most other boxes

Ira i do like that AKA you have. I really like how the mesh grills are more like the 9998
including the protruding mics. Very nice

yes sounds great really the deck is basicly 9998 style which for a lot might find it a bit complicted to change the belts but if you have done a 998 you should be at home with this box also even the akas....

I took a look inside one of my 9998's once because it needs new belts. That
was as far as i got, i very quickly closed it back up :-/
