imho --
and despite the little kinks...
ebay has a well thought-out auction program -- right ??

yes. :-D

Except --the moment any high bidder retracts his/her bid-
then the exact remaining $$ high bid price becomes exposed to all mankind-- :dunce:  :-O :annoyed:

so - thats a serious fault with their system.

WHAT can/should ebay do to correct this problemo ??

Well, in my mind, retractions shouldn't be permitted period and that should take care of the problem. If a bidder can't figure out how to bid properly or is too wishy washy to bid positively and affirmitively, then they, and they alone, should have to live with that decision since it does have an effect on others. Buyers should be held accountable for their bids and SELLERS should have to abide by their selling terms and policies! [strike]Hmph![/strike]

I agree completely! It's the only fair thing to do... :agree:

...even though I won a personal grail through a second chance bid once when someone backed out.
Who knows? Maybe I wouldn't have had to pay as much as I did, since it was probably down to him and me? :-/

Retractions have always been a way for sneaky bidders to figure out a competitor's maximum bid. Put in a crazy-high bid and retract it. And second chance offers are usually given by sellers at the next-highest-bidder's maximum bid. If the winner (the one who then defaults) had never bid, the runner-up's maximum bid wouldn't be exposed to the seller, and that bidder would've won the auction at a lower amount.

On the other hand, eBay has given sellers ways to cheat, too, like by letting them cancel auctions ("item no longer available") to sell off eBay and accept a "behind the scenes" offer.

Cheating works both ways on eBay.

I've used the retraction as a bidder and would hate to see it go... or put entirely at the seller's discretion. I've made some stupid bids over the years after missing something important buried in a listing description, and would hate to have been stuck with them, even though they were my mistakes. Even though the retraction feature is abused sometimes, I still like the fact that a bidder has a way out.

I am of the opinion that retracting bidders should be hung, drawn and quartered. Not that I am at all biased at this point in time. :-D

No matter what the rules are, people will find a way to exploit them.

I'm not a huge fan of some of ebay's updates recently, but I'll still buy and sell there until a better option comes along.

Overall, ebay has been good to me as a seller, and as a buyer.

And, I've been very, very lucky not to have been frauded. Yea, I'm knocking on some serious wood after that comment

(ok children, I left the door wide open with the "knocking on wood" comment.... have at it and let the phallic comments now bombard me! LOL)

I don't feel canceling auctions is really cheating. I've arranged agreements with sellers off Ebay as an incentive to them to avoid fees. Everyones happy.....

Is there a rule in place for buyers that abuse the retraction feature? A suspension or something is in order.

as for second chance offer prices --
well ,unless we are thrilled to get the box for our exact high bid --

then we should counter-offer with the price we 'would have'
won it for --fair and square........
if the phony winner had never bid at all

On the other hand, I've had buyers become ecstatic to be offered a second chance to buy at their high bid when a second chance comes along on an item they lost out on simply because they don't want to risk the competition (and another chance at being outbid) again. You never know what could happen. I see stuff being offered and result in no sales all the time, then when relisted, suddenly, there are 3 or 4 bids and the item sells or significantly higher than min bid. Why there was no bids the first time around can only be explained by timing.
