Thanks to the wonderfully kind hearted Brother Aza I've added a lovely GF-9696 to my collection!
The unit was in pretty bad shape when I got her, no power and a fair few cosmetic problems. Most problematic was that she wouldn't power up!
This turned out to be a job for my repairer who discovered the power switch (which is, honestly, a bloody poor design!) had buggered up entirely.
He rewired a nice new little power switch under the tuning knob on the right hand side, which isn't obtrusive at all and most importantly WORKS!
She also had no antennas, so I temporarily donated the thinner ones off my Reader's Digest, which fit very nicely. There was some pretty damaged paint on the top and bottom of the tuner window, so the top edge I painted and the bottom edge I chromed up, just for something different. As the old adage goes: the more chrome the better! Lots of cleaning and refinishing of the clear windows that had lost their lustre and had a few issue, but apart from that, just a good amount of TLC got her all rockin' on! Apart from the power swtich there were ZERO internal issues, even the deck's belts are perfect and the APLD works like a dream.
This one's been on the list for a long time, and I've seen so many other brothers go on about the 9696 so it's awesome to be able to fully understand how kick arse a blaster this is! Many thanks again to Aza,.. I hope one day he'll be on here thanking me for returning the favour!
Rock On.
