Hey guys,

As you saw in the other thread, I have been working on the Aiwa TPR-820 I got from Yahoo Japan last year. This radio was so worn out. I bought it for a few reasons...#1, so many members said this was a hot model and they were right. The sound quality for it's size is a HUGE surprise. #2, I like the looks of it and lastly because it was so cheap. I think I paid $5.00 or something. But it showed up without a battery door, so I made one, it had a broken antenna tip (got a new white tipped antenna from Strange Boom Boks) and it was missing a switch tab, which I ended up finding, someone put it inside the tuning knob

One of the downers with this radio is there is allot of aluminum trim and on this radio, it was all dented and bent up. So all that had to come off. I did my best to tap out the dent's, but there is only so much that can be done. Someone wrote on the top trim with a shaprie. I couldn't get that off

In the end, it is what it is...It's not a "Grail". It's not perfect....but I think the final product is allot better than it was.

THE TEAR DOWN:

Wow, that new colour looks great - it really upgrades it's appearance and looks like a factory option from back in the day.

Did you find it a much nicer and less stressed rebuild experience knowing it only owed you $5.00? ;-)

Working on my cheap GF-9292 was a bit like that - I'm always much more nervous working on a unit that owes me hundreds of dollars.

Well done and the big question, how do these 9V Aiwas really sound? I know it probably sounds great for a 9V box but does it keep with up or beat to hell other bigger 12V or 15V boxes?

James... :-)

That box and the M70 is in my wish list... ...and I put some of mines for trade (here in Brasil)...

Nice work...

Cheers.

James, you would be very surprised how well this radio does with only 6 d cells. I can't tell the difference between this radio and other mid sized 8 cell radios.

I'm not sure if I would be "OK" with screwing up this radio, even though it only cost $5.00. I hate the idea of loosing a radio :-O

As I told my wife, I'm a collector, not a dealer!

Freaking amazing work, Chris! Do you have any close ups of how the dent repair to the top trim turned out? My 950 has a dent, I was thinking about trying to repair it. Amazing how good these boxes sound.

Excuse me for digging up this old topic.

Just amazing job Lasonic.

With your work, I don't need my stupid camera when I'm going to open my newly acquired Aiwa CS-80  :hooray:

Yeah, I have a question, what else Aiwa models fall into this 950 family, which as far as I noticed consist 4 model: 950, 955, CS-80 and CS-820?
