Recapping ANY boombox would be an enormous undertaking, but it is indeed possible. Our own Superduper did just that on a Sanyo M-X920 a few months ago and it apparently made a huge difference.

Don't forget the Bombeat 40. Maybe the old man will chime in with his observations on any perceived differences.

the bombeat 40 now has a crisp//strong and brand NEW sounding high end

the problemmo is that guys like norm and ramon work TENS of HOURS to complete
this tedious work --
and during all that long time -
they could have created the next PORCHE engine

i did it on a 920 also and it made a huge differance indeed it sounded a lot better even the bass was more defined than before ,, its a lot of work but its not impossible you just have to take your time know your way around , making sure you install the right value caps and watching polarity you dont want to put it backward ouch..... :sadno: have fun...  :w00t:

you're best to start with a simple box first

Very good advice if your not very experienced with this kind of work. Buy a cheap box from the thrifts or fleas and teach yourself how to work on it, things such as changing belts, cleaning switches and pots (sliders too), and recapping. If you royally screw up at some point you've only damaged a junker but you will learn important skills.

I am in the process of replacing capacitors on EIGHT boomboxes(Pioneer,Technics,Clairtone,Sharp,Sony and JVC ...holy grails), as some need recaping to work to my standards. I estimate the time per boombox to be from 3-4 hours (I know my way with a desoldering and soldering iron and I have all the proper tools, including measuring equipement).

I replace the original (dried out and/or tired) caps with quality Nichicon caps (Fine Gold and the likes). You have to know that a shiny great looking 30 year old classic boombox is still OLD and tired inside even if it is squeaky clean and patched.

When I recondition a boombox it is inside out, ho half way job here. :nonono: I even go as far as to have missing doors made from plexi and [painted to the original !

All the switches are cleaned with proper cleaning solutions, all major parts tested. I will show pics at some point.
