Often I notice:

.....a new member is coming in,asks a question and gone for good again at once after waiting a just a short time....

The question is answered a day later or so,but a lot of newbees seem to expect getting BLITZ answers on their questions within seconds....
:sadno:

:agree:

Another scenario is - looking to buy a boombox and then becoming upset when nobody sells you one within a week. :-/

Often times people will register because they have a single question .Perhaps they happened upon an old blaster that needs a fix to be resold or simply to serve them with a utilitarian purpose. If a forum is really large,he might get an immediate response. If he does not, maybe he just sell it "as is" or throws it out for a radio that is fully functional.

Actually I did this a while back on a video forum. There was a specific thing I was trying to do. As I'm not otherwise interested in video,I was active in the forum for just long enough to get the information I needed. It's very hard for me to believe that someone who is an enthusiast and has a passion for something would simply leave after having waited only a day for the answer to a question. It just may be that these people are not real collectors.

I've noticed that Fatdog, some newbies get really upset at this. I would suggest that they aren't true collectors anyway if this is the case, true collecting takes desire, some knowledge and patience. They probably just got a quick woody for the box they had as a kid and that's as far as it goes, It doesn't seem they have long term desire to be a contributing member. I could be wrong but that's my impression. Nothing wrong with that except for the testiness they exhibit quickly when they don't get what they want.

well the whole thing about this is not everybody are in selling right away and most of the boxes may not be on the sale list,, and to answer a question right away is when we are on the site as we all work and not able to answer but that does not mean we are not willing at the contrer we are here to help as much as we can , and yes there were times that even my question did not get an answer because no one had that perticular box so i cannot get mad for that not everyone have all the boxes except jens in his database

Everyone was new at one time.... I believe that folks that have been collecting for some time and just newly discovered the forum have the best chance of becoming constructive and participating members. Others who have just started collecting will want more info and handholding. Some folks, especially the younger crowd who likes IM and Chat will be disappointed in a forum postings. Mostly, however, I think that the folks who hit and run just are looking for more info and joined only to ask that one question. They probably don't even have the site bookmarked and probably couldn't navigate their way back without extensive searches.

And the most hated question from a few new "members".
Found an old boombox, how much is it worth.... :-/
TOTALY most of them are just after a huge profit.

Yes, sometimes... :'-(

But i loved the question from the friend, who gave me the rare FISHER.
The question was not about selling, he only wanted to know how much it is worth.
My answer:
NOTHING, this is only a heep electronic trash!!
At a flea you will maybe get a few euros...

But i got it from you for my collection.
So it is unbelieveable worth - for me!

Worth is always in the eyes of the owner... ;-)

I'd been buying and collecting boomboxes for years before joining S2G. It took a lot of time, study, money, and - yes - mistakes to learn the ropes. But I was in it for the long haul. It was pabaker who told me, after selling me a box on eBay, that I really belonged in a collectors' forum. (He actually phoned me to tell me that!) And, even then, I lurked and read old posts for quite a while before posting, so I didn't seem too stupid when I finally contributed something, and so there was less of a chance of making a comment or asking a question that had already been made or asked several times before.

That's quite a bit different from someone who wants a quick bit of information (no time for, or interest in, prolonged research) about a boombox he picked up for cheap at a garage sale last week, or who has a couple of boxes he wants to unload without the hassles and fees of eBay.

I don't have a lot of patience when I sense I'm being befriended in order to be used. (Rememeber Richard Hatch making those "alliances" back on the first Survivor?) And the same goes for newbie posters who come into this forum only for what they can get out of it. And "get out of it" they do... usually sooner rather than later!

The main cause of this, I see, is the instant-want-it-get-it attitude most people develop online. Patience is a thing of the past, especially with younger folks. The patience is lost, along with the thrill and anticipation, and they could literally find a radio, ask about it on here, have it on ebay BIN and have it paid for all within 12 hours.

The speed and accessibility of the internet has brought lots of good and bad things to our hobby and it's become very easy to be a 'cash in' collector for a few weeks until something else takes your fancy. It is a shame, and I'd imagine the amount of new collectors that actually get into the hobby is only a small percentage of those who start out in a blazing fury.

As boomboxes are still reasonably common to find I think a few too many new guys just assume all the models are common, and it makes it hard for them to realise that it will take years in some cases to get their own personal (or widely considered) grails. Patience is what makes a personally valuable collection, every extra day/month/year it takes to get the radios you really want makes them all the more special when you get them I find.

We can only encourage and foster new collectors into the the most rewarding ways to enjoy our hobby, it's really up to them. One thing is for sure though, without this place and s2go any new collectors wouldn't have a snowballs chance in hell of getting the most out of collecting ghettoblasters, thats for sure. And I thank the gods of portable audio for this on a daily basis.
