Just a quickie here as I was intending taking a break until my grail box f**ked up on me. I was giving it a once over earlier via line in, and the left speaker completely died. I have complete normal sound through the right side, but the left is completely dead. Gotta say I am feeling pretty gutted, as I payed way more than this box usually sells for, and is a minty one. It's also my personal grail, so if anyone can help me out here, I would appreciate it very much.

Cheers

is it important that your box remain "factory original"? if not, you might think of it as an opportunity to hotrod your box with higher quality and efficiency drivers.

If your unlucky like me it won't be a speaker. In fact I don't think I've ever had a speaker go out, just lots and lots of amps and electronic components. I currently have 5 boomboxes that have one of the channels out. I'm sure y'all wanted to know that..

If the boombox lost a channel while getting a "workout", it's likely (but not definitely) either a blown speaker or blown amp. This is especially true if the speakers are less than 8-ohms. Other members have suggested that you can safely stuff 2-ohm speakers in a boombox. I differ in that opinion, but regardless, most blown amps that I've seen are in boomboxes that have lower impedance speakers. They work/sound great, and have lots of power, but the frequency or occurance of blown outputs are definitely higher in those models.

A couple things to check:

1) check line-out to see if you get output on both channels (to see if the issue is in the preamp section).
2) check the headphone (or speaker out) jacks to see if you get anything. If yes, then possible bad jack or bad speaker. If no, then possiblly bad amp.

the impedance of a speaker changes during musical peaks and dips , a speaker rated at 4 ohms at 500 hz actually puts more of a load if the speakers has to produce 50 hz the load could change to 2 ohms for an instant .

Thanks for the reply's guys means a lot.

I am no tech whatsoever but I will have a look inside for the obvious disconnected wire issue. If it's not that then I don't know where I will go? The led section is bouncing on both channels, does that give any more clues? I really hope it's not the amp, I do have a beater model so could swap a speaker if need be.

The led (VU) are usually powered by preamp. So that suggests more that output amp or speaker issue or wiring issue.
