I won this in an online auction for a very low price (I’m choosing not to disclose the amount, but I will say it’s under $100 with all taxes, fees and shipping included) and I’m waiting for it to arrive. I’m certain if it were sold at an online marketplace with more exposure, it wouldn’t have ended so low, and it’s worth significantly more than I paid, I just need some help from more experience boombox collectors with knowing exactly how much.

I honestly never even knew this color existed, and apparently nobody else did either. Every FB group or forum I posted in got multiple replies from people saying that exact same thing.

I’ve never actually seen a RC-S55 posted on eBay or any other online marketplace in working condition, let alone any working condition close to this, and/or with this many of the original extras included. All I’ve managed to find within the past 6-12 months since I’ve gotten into the hobby are priced between $100-150, and all of them have been a combination of: non working/requiring parts almost impossible to obtain, missing the cassette player (Walkman), in a physical condition nearing “mangled”. Some have sold at that price, some haven’t, so I’m led to assume that a working version of this model sells for no less than the $100-150 range the “for parts”/needing major repair examples have sold for. Additionally I’m sure it would be safe to assume that this colorway is more rare and sought after than the others, which would increase the value, right?

With all that said, I have yet to see a single listing, sold, unsold or in-progress, for a working or minor repair/servicing needed JVC S55, in any color, with any number of original accessories included to realistically know where to set a price benchmark for this piece.

Now, I’m sure some people are rolling their eyes at this post, so allow me to clarify: No, I’m not just buying it to flip for profit. A piece this nice and complete is among the list of “holy grails” for anyone that collects minis and/or walkmans, and I happen to fall into both categories (specifically blue walkmans coincidentally). This wasn’t something I was specifically hunting for, but it popped up for a price I knew I’d never see again, so I pursued it. My little bro had mentioned wanting it, although he’d never seen one of them before, but I didn’t take it too seriously. After I told him I won the auction, he was actually pretty bummed and I realized he really meant it. He’s 18, but really into stereos, Walkmans, iPod modding, old 78s and 45s, etc. but yet to get into boomboxes, although I’ve been trying. I figured if anything could get him into collecting boomboxes, this would be it, and we agreed that I’d only sell it to him if anyone, but only for something close enough to current market value, to make it worth getting rid of on my end, but low enough that hes getting a fair deal on his end. Unfortunately I just don’t even know a ballpark number to present to him and no amount of internet searching can fix that.

Photos below of the actual unit I’m receiving from the auction page from which it was won. Any info you can give me regarding value is greatly appreciated

Well I wouldn’t profit at my little brother’s expense so I’d charge him the $87 you paid for it. If you want market value put it on the market…stick it on eBay with a well prepared listing. Let your brother bid and if he wins give him a percentage discount. Easy

Hang on…you haven’t even got it yet and tested it? Chances are it’s not working like the seller says lol

These Walkman boxes are purebred pain in the ass you better hope you never have to work on that Walkman because you're going to need a microscope
.
Not sure there's a high demand for these boxes being that most people have never seen one.
The PC 100 is jvc's top of the line Walkman boombox and it's probably Leaps and Bounds Beyond this one in sound.

I can't believe anyone would get so uptight over money for something that a family member wants! Either offer it to him for what you paid for it or, do the decent thing and give it to him.

Most people on here, me definitely included, just collect boxes because we like them and don't give a toss about values.

I’m not sure what you’re asking the forum? How much to sell this to your brother for?

basically yeah. I just want some ballpark figures on what these are worth, with things like the rare colorway and all the added accessories taken into account.

I'm not familiar with that model. It MIGHT be worth more than you paid, but not so much that you'd need to worry about it. I doubt anyone would pay more than 200 for it, but there's no way of telling.

Seller never claimed anything. It was from an estate sale. If it doesn’t work, I already have plenty of sales listings to use as reference for a price point. What I don’t have is any sales for working models in this condition to use as a reference

I guess the estimate I had in my head wasn’t too far off after all.

If anyone has anything else to contribute, feel free to do so

Theres a dynamic between us when it comes to this kinda situation that wouldn’t make sense to anyone who doesn’t know about it. This type of thing happens all the time with us. When something like this comes up, we decide beforehand which one of us is going to bid on it. Sometimes one of us changes our minds, it’s happens. And when it does, we pay just as much as anyone else would, as long as whoever bought the item agrees to sell it.

It’s a fair system and it always works out.

trust me, he gets plenty of little gifts from me when it comes to stuff like this

that’s not at all the situation. You can’t talk like that about a situation you know nothing about. When something pops up like this, we decide between us who is going to be the one to purchase it so we’re not bidding against each other. We both agree or we don’t buy it. He changed his mind. It happens. When it does, we pay fair market value if the other decides to get rid of it.

it’s actually not selfish at all. I could have told him no, but I’m willing to give him a good deal. I’d rather keep it myself, but I’m still giving him a chance
