I won this in an online auction for a very low price (I’m choosing not to disclose the amount, but I will say it’s under $100 with all taxes, fees and shipping included) and I’m waiting for it to arrive. I’m certain if it were sold at an online marketplace with more exposure, it wouldn’t have ended so low, and it’s worth significantly more than I paid, I just need some help from more experience boombox collectors with knowing exactly how much.
I honestly never even knew this color existed, and apparently nobody else did either. Every FB group or forum I posted in got multiple replies from people saying that exact same thing.
I’ve never actually seen a RC-S55 posted on eBay or any other online marketplace in working condition, let alone any working condition close to this, and/or with this many of the original extras included. All I’ve managed to find within the past 6-12 months since I’ve gotten into the hobby are priced between $100-150, and all of them have been a combination of: non working/requiring parts almost impossible to obtain, missing the cassette player (Walkman), in a physical condition nearing “mangled”. Some have sold at that price, some haven’t, so I’m led to assume that a working version of this model sells for no less than the $100-150 range the “for parts”/needing major repair examples have sold for. Additionally I’m sure it would be safe to assume that this colorway is more rare and sought after than the others, which would increase the value, right?
With all that said, I have yet to see a single listing, sold, unsold or in-progress, for a working or minor repair/servicing needed JVC S55, in any color, with any number of original accessories included to realistically know where to set a price benchmark for this piece.
Now, I’m sure some people are rolling their eyes at this post, so allow me to clarify: No, I’m not just buying it to flip for profit. A piece this nice and complete is among the list of “holy grails” for anyone that collects minis and/or walkmans, and I happen to fall into both categories (specifically blue walkmans coincidentally). This wasn’t something I was specifically hunting for, but it popped up for a price I knew I’d never see again, so I pursued it. My little bro had mentioned wanting it, although he’d never seen one of them before, but I didn’t take it too seriously. After I told him I won the auction, he was actually pretty bummed and I realized he really meant it. He’s 18, but really into stereos, Walkmans, iPod modding, old 78s and 45s, etc. but yet to get into boomboxes, although I’ve been trying. I figured if anything could get him into collecting boomboxes, this would be it, and we agreed that I’d only sell it to him if anyone, but only for something close enough to current market value, to make it worth getting rid of on my end, but low enough that hes getting a fair deal on his end. Unfortunately I just don’t even know a ballpark number to present to him and no amount of internet searching can fix that.
Photos below of the actual unit I’m receiving from the auction page from which it was won. Any info you can give me regarding value is greatly appreciated
