Recently, I was at an art museum. One of the installations gave me whiplash, where I ran over to greet this boombox I saw on the floor playing audio under a painting.
It looked new, and cheap. But nice and big. Even before I noticed the iPod interface, it was obviously new and cheap versus old and cheap. But it was big, and not bad looking at all.
So obviously, while everyone else knew that a company finally made a brand-new 80s boombox impersonation, I only recently found out.
But it didn't sound too bad. My (somewhat limited) experience with true 80s boomboxes, has been that, in at least the JVC stuff - the build quality is phenomenal. Simply put - so much more care and quality is put into the tuner and amp of those old systems.
That being said, those i931s are cheap, and made by a company that makes $5 dvd players. I don't have one yet, but I'd love to see what people have done with them, and what kind of specs they have. I see that Btphoto put some LEDs on his, which is very cool. Anyone else?
Note: my experience has been, that the cheapest part of an audio system is often the most important one. Good speakers can almost trump anything else. There are speakers out there that will rock you with 3 watts, they just cost a bunch of money. And if you're manufacturing 100,000 boomboxes, a bunch of money x100,000 is too much - so you put in cheap Chinese stuff.
However, as you or I will only be listening to one boombox at a time, we have options.
I am betting that, knowing the amplifier specifications, somebody can, or has, come up with some really cool modifications to this system. Personally, I have made a boombox literally 3 times louder, simply by replacing speakers and reinforcing the speaker cabinet itself.
So what have you guys done with this i931?
