Another discussion got me thinking.... frequently overlooked, neglected otherwise in the closet boxes often get "no love" and seldom shared for fear of either ridicule, put downs etc. However, I know you've got some lurking in your closet, attic or garages. You know the ones, those Emersons, Soundesign, Lloyds, GE, Sears, Montgomery Wards, etc.

Post them here and give 'em some love. If you despise these (and other entry level) brands because they are beneath you... that's ok, you can skip this thread now and hate somewhere else, lol.:agree::agree::lol::smooch::eek::oops:o_O

Here's a couple of GE "bass boost" thingamajigs. Does your JVC or Panasonic or Sanyo have bass boost? Does your Conion or M90 have bass boost? :-D

Who is Cyberex and what do they make/sell? Apparently, they made at least 1 boombox, and it's a heavy sucker. Feels like 40 pounds but that's probably because my popeye arms have now become olive-oyl arms. Still, it's definitely a heavy son of a gun regardless. Feels solidly built and a built in TV to boot! :-O:w00t:

Bet you didn't know Quasar makes a boombox, probably weighs like 50 pounds (see previous post)! Ok, maybe 45. It feels like a cinder block in any case. And holy smokes, it has a built in projection TV! :w00t::drool::thumbsup::weed::hooray::breakdance::agree: Didn't know these existed before I bought this and up til now, don't think I've ever seen another one (theres one on eBay right now). Wish I had time to dust off the cobwebs and spiff it up. Alas, these things get no love.

  • Built-in mic records lessons/student responses
  • Variable speed playback on cassette/CD players
  • Plays CD, CD-R, CD-RW, MP3-CDs
  • AM/FM stereo
  • Rugged ABS plastic casing for durability and classroom safety
  • Steel grilles protect speakers from accidental puncturing
  • Two 1/4” external speaker jacks for additional speakers
  • Line input/output connects with computers & other equipment
  • 6 built-in headphone jacks for listening center capabilities
  • Detachable power supply stores in internal compartment when not in use
  • 3.5mm and 1/4” mic inputs for public address uses
  • Full function remote control (RC-2400) for flexibility
And the colour is stunning too, between cream and hearing aid beige, what more could you want from a boombox? Oh and its styled like an egg too! I paid £15 for this beauty from a guy just down the road from my workplace.

Very few small boxes get any love these days. As this hobby has matured and gone "mainstream", it seems most of the newcomers are only interested in the grails.

Here I present the D2810 "Power Booster", which is probably the smallest mono with 3 speakers. And it actually sounds pretty good!

I have a little Sony clock radio that'll give them near any egg and run for its money I mean the thing sounds great and it's Extremely Loud even with tiny little speakers.

Aside from eggs I collect any Boombox there is that comes my way cuz I know if I don't take care of them they'll just get thrown away or nobody will care at all about them so I just add them to the pile if they work that's great if not not much I can do but I won't throw it away anymore because they don't make them anymore. Plus there's been times where even a cheap Boombox had a diode or resistor or a f****** something that was actually useful.

One thing I do know was that Quasar made top the line TVs back in those days.

Here's an ugly GE that is so '90s looking that I don't want to like it, don't want to use it, don't want to hear it.
But try as I might, it's too good not to use so it's my kitchen tunes generator, complete with sticky kitchen grime and dust.

Check out all these fantastic features!

Do you see it? Can you spot the "neglected" radio?

IMG_8765.jpg
My night stand. Ignore all the pill bottles, I'm a very sick man, counting the days.

But it's a Panasonic RF radio, one of those AM/FM/3-SW band thingamajigs. Panasonic made a bunch of them, and GE has a couple of copy cats. Always popular due to their great looks and awesome reception. I restored this probably 20 years ago, full recap, full cleaning, the tuning drum had a dim bulb in it, I replaced with LEDs, added LED to the meter, and the lights and the frequency counter has their own switch so they don't always have to be on. But dammit those Pannys are so prone to oxidation in their controls. Not one short year later, all the controls had so much static I thought the radio was stuck on Neil Diamonds cracklin rosie number. Needless to say I stopped using it after that. Can I open er back up and clean the controls? You bet. Do I want to? Uh... lemme see.... NOPE. Will I ever? Probably when I sell it.

IMG_8758.jpg

When it's lit up, it's a pretty radio (ignore that it's covered in 1/4" of dust, just pretend it's not there).

IMG_8759.jpg

And the flourescent frequency counter display......:drool::drool::drool::drool::drool::drool::drool::drool::drool:
