I picked up an SK-550 today but the antenna is broken. Are there any replacement alternatives for it?

If you still have the base in the box, you can get another antenna to mount to it. May not slide all the way into the box, but better than nothing.

The base is in the box. At some point I'll open it up and see what is in there. I live in the Boston suburbs and FM tunes surprisingly well and I get stereo.

Has anyone ever cracked the case on one of these?

Just curious what I am in for.

the front panel is removable , most of the electronics are mounted to the back case i.e the cassette mech tuner and amp boards , remove the screws from the back case might be one inside the battery box ,you do have to remove the cassette door cover , the eq sliders and the tuning knob to get the two halves apart there is one plug that from the speakers in the front case to the amp board just unplug that and you should be able to fully separate the halves , this box is very easy to work on.

Very helpful, thank you for the write-up. I am on vacation this week and away from home. When I get back I'll tackle this and post progress in the tech forum. I really like this box. It's big but thin and has a very good sound. It will be fun to put it back in order, maybe even with a few performance mods too.

:agree: these are very well built good sounding and have very detailed trims and other parts that really stand out with class.
