This is my Pioneer CK-3. You can tell by the pics that she was in need of some love, that dang foam surround around the speakers was totally rotten. Removing the woofer physically, I made the jaunt to my local electronics shop. Went in, armed with the woofer and a positive attitude, gravitating to that wall where I would find solace in new foam surrounds - I forgot to say Hi to Sheila, the owner of the store. She came up behind me and said "Fine, if you don`t need my help then be like that, see if I care". Taken aback, I turned to look at her and she said " You look distressed- are you ok?" I replied " No, I`m not OK, I can`t fix my baby today". Knowing I meant a boombox, she looked at the speaker, looked at her wall of surrounds and said" Those are nearly impossible to get". She noticed my heart sinking down to my feet , and my body language with head hung low, shoulders collapsing, almost like having the wind knocked out of you. "Follow me" she said. Now, being married I know better than to argue with a woman who says those two words..only difference is I like to be taken by the hand and lead upstairs- this was different, but into the back room. She pulls out her reference guide, looks up foam surrounds, checks her database all the while a light shining deep down in me, that glimmer of hope..she then says " Can`t get them. It`s not a popular size, I can check Pioneer for you if you like.." I told her yes please. Checking with the Pioneer database, she said she could order replacement speakers from them, at $69.00 each. Now I am one to restore functionality, but there is just something about everything in a unit that is original that really appeals to me. I told her I would let her know, and left empty handed, my determination rising to restore this piece of fine equipment.

Driving yet another 20 miles or so, I came upon the next electronics shop of choice, these guys are global. They have to have it, I thought..armed with woofer, Walking in to their surround wall, an empty stock box for the size I needed glared back at me.Frantically I removed the box, looked behind, underneath, even in other boxes - but- foiled again. Went up to the counter and asked if they had this size, they replied they did not, and after checking the database said that size was discontinued because of lack of popularity in 4" surrounds.

Leaving in a depressed state, I decided to check epay. I know, i know, you are asking "Why didn`t he do that at first" . I think it was that instant gratification thing that drove me to finding them locally. Checked epay, found a good seller with the exact size needed and ordered them right there. After 15 days of waiting, they finally have arrived. Bummer is, I have to go to work now and have to do them later :'-(

For now, here are a few pics of the box, the problem and the proposed solution. Thread will be updated as progress is made. The patient:

All the while, I'm reading thinking that the woofer is going to be a square one, or a 5x7 or a 7.23" or something like that.

Yeah, ebay is great, isn't it? I've found so many obscure and unobtainiable semiconductors that can't be available anyhwere else.....

Glad you got the part to fix your "beloved" box.

I know it's a pain...but as you said, "some things need to be original...

So that means glueing in the surrounds beneath the cones like the originals...hard? Yes. Impossible? No. :-D

I just love that I found a place that I can read cool stories like this one about people that love boomboxes as much as I do.

Cheers OSS :afro:
