Just starting to understand what’s what and which boxes get more love than others. My vintage gear is exclusively Pioneer, I just love the warm feel of their stuff. What’s the deal with their boxes? Any good? Seems like they were a smaller player in the market. SK 21 for example, seems reasonably priced, quality? Thanks guys and gals!

Pioneer are one of the best sounding and highest quality built boomboxes ever made. It means they are also very difficult to service and repair. The LEDS which they used before any one else do have a tenancy to burn out but look super cool.

I have 2 SK-95's and had an SK-71. These boxes were quality through and through however, they are monsters to work on. Pioneers line is rock solid. You can't go wrong.
Their sound doesn't shake the earth but they are beautifully sounding.

OK I saw they look like a nightmare inside as nothing plugs in and all is soldered. Question then, so , the cassette is non working on the SK 31 I just bought. Maybe start with a belt? and if so, is that terrible to change on these? Thanks for any advise, cant wait to get it!

I don't think the Pioneers are as complex as the Aiwas! I've worked on the 21, 31 and the 550. I'd say they are slightly easier then the Sanyo 9994/9990. I have recently been working on a Sony Cf-590s and I feel they are close to the same complexity as the Pioneer SK-21/31. I tested the Pioneer Sk-21 vs the Sony Cf-590s with the same external speakers, and I thought the pioneer sounded a little richer!

Yes you have to replace all belts that's the easy bit. Looks like a full tear down. I find there is a heavy burden on the mech to operate correctly you must have the correct belts so the motor can get up to full speed. Motor should probably be serviced or replaced at the same time.
