Well my first phase of restoration is mostly complete on the Sanyo M-X650K. I’m sorry to say all the little roaches inside are gone. I still have the grille to spray and install but that will be done later and I’m digging the look without the grille. Here’s some before, during and after photos.

I’m very happy with the outcome of the cleaning. So now is phase 2, dialing in the sound and fixing the broken components. The Boombox powers on and the FM radio works. I didn’t get any stations on the short wave 1 and 2, and no stations on AM but not certain if AM stations exist in Cali, Colombia (antenna was extended high). The speakers put out sound however both speakers work only with the ‘Mono’ setting. On ‘stereo’ and ‘expand’ only one side (left) worked. Then as I listened to FM, the Right started working and the left had no output of sound. In ‘Mono’ when both speakers can be heard, the left side is stronger and sounds better than the right side. Upon physical examination of the right tweeter and woofer, the right tweeter has a tiny tear in the paper close to the outside ring.

I want to start with using contact cleaner spray for the outside dials and switches on the face on the Boombox. As for the inside, is there anywhere I should spray contact cleaner? Any other advice to fix the speakers on ‘stereo’ and ‘expand’ would be appreciated.
I am going to pick up a multimeter in a couple days and would like to learn how to use it to check the wires, speakers, and everything else. Does anyone know of a video or website for beginners in order to understand how to use the multimeter to check the electrical components of the Boombox? I’ve used one on electrical on a car once before.

Nice work so far. I'd recommend cleaning the speakers with a soft paint brush and water. Just do it while they're upside down.
For the stereo problem, it's most likely a dirty contact inside the Function switch, the Stereo switch, or the long Record bar which looks something like this:

I used contact cleaner on the switches and dials as well as the record bar. This resulted in the speakers functioning evenly in FM. Still not picking up any AM or short wave stations however now there is a buzz noise as if I am between channels...maybe it’s functioning fine and there’s no channels to tune into?
Next I hooked up a turntable in the “phono in” hookup on the back. 639E3F0A-234A-4CE4-87D4-E0B6C473A8E2.jpeg

This feature is awesome and shows how versatile and stylish this machine really is. And the sound was great. Very vintage sound.
Now I’d like to attempt to service the cassette deck. The belts are intact however are old and brittle but not melted or gummy which is great. I can take them off and search for replacements. One belt looks flat and wider than the others. Nothing spins, no noises. I’ve read and watched videos on cleaning the heads, capstone shaft and pinch roller with alcohol and cotton swabs. I’ve also read to lube the capstone shaft and reels using a “light grease or oil” but I don’t know what to actually use for the lube. Still need to find a multimeter here. I’ll go downtown tomorrow to find one and I’ll also look for a cassette in order to use during testing of the deck. Any advice on the tape deck is much appreciated.

Those 8 rubber nubs that brace the grill, I wonder if you could change them to black instead of brown?

Also here is the battery door. A6D5CFA9-F521-496E-BCE2-C2E85FF729F9.jpeg

I’m thankful it’s intact however the black foam padding is a mess. I can easily remove it but does anyone have ideas on what I can use to replace it.

I was thinking of possibly painting them. Looks like they were originally clear and then became yellowish and brown over the years. I have flat black spray paint, not certain that will last on rubber material. I also can hand paint them with a small amount of latex wall paint, not sure It would take on a rubber material.

I actually had some rubber stuff for doors and windows so I cut 2 stripes and layed one on top of the other. It’s a little bit denser of a foam than the original but I think it will work just fine to keep the batteries in place. AB5A92E4-8657-4B3E-B252-00662762292C.jpeg

Only 1 of the 6 tabs to connect the back to the front actually are functional. I am in the process of drilling out foreign screws in 2 of the tabs with a metal drill bit. A few others are broken on the inside I believe. Are there any posts or tricks or options to fix this? The cassette door, and front knobs also prevent the box from coming apart. Although if I try to open the cassette door, I have to pinch the front and back of the box to ensure that the Cassette door opens when eject is pressed. Any advice or options are much appreciated.

not bad for dollar store flat black and clear coat. I’ll install it tomorrow. Right now I’m hitting up the cassette deck part of the forum.

...Nice write up, I've had my sanyo m-x650k since new , it needs some help, i think one woofer and one tweeter bit the dust, is there another model that uses the same speakers? Or is there a good replacement ,that is recommended, thanx, DC.
