Hey, here an idea... let's combine the inconvenience of reel-to-reel tapes with the limited sound quality of Compact Cassettes!
Brilliant! Let's put it in production! We'll call it the O'casse....
Reels are open to the elements because nobody sticks their tapes in pockets or anything like that...
....and it's not like cassette shells are expensive or hard to come by.
Imagine some kid on the Tokyo subway trying to fumble with this just to play another tape. Don't know how well this product did (or didn't) but I imagine they repurposed the tooling used for these to make all those 'reel-to-reel' cassetes everyone nowadays has to have for their boombox collection.
