Some of you may recall me previously announcing the ever more frequent failures of long time electronics companies, going out of business. Well the economic storm has swept by and took out many of my favorite parts stores -- the lastest, a big one -- Partstore.com. :-O :sadno: What now? Oh My!

And yes, their website is no longer in operation .... check it......... http://www.partstore.com

Oh noes! :'-( It seems that we will have to depend even more on fellow collectors for parts now, which isn't too bad. ;-)

It's nothing like Partstore.com and the available inventory listed is but a drop in the bucket for what was offered by partstore. If you never visited or ordered from them, then you'll never be able to appreciate the gravity of this store closing. They were ranked amongst the very top internet companies.

I did order one time but then a couple weeks later my order got cancelled due to it being unavailable

The good thing about their website was you could do a model search and then find part numbers for parts for that model and also see what other models use that part.........it's too bad the data base can't stay online.

I do think most of the time their parts were not in stock or NA, but it was a good site for info and research.

agree with eric -
great way to learn all the alternate possibilities --
--------------------------------------------------------

a few years ago --our french friend :-D :-) :-D
bredgeo --checked out their listings for m90 parts-
he needed about 20 - yes TWENTY m90 items -
and they wont ship overseas

so he asked me to order them for him-
and then re-ship to him -

i replied that he was a huge PITA  :-P
and the NFW would they have more than 2 of his 20 requests, anyway-
so forget it -

well --pushy pr-k that he was  :-)
he insisted that i try it --

THEY SHIPPED 18 ---
including 2 OEM antennas !!!! :-O :-O

Well, I've been sounding the alarm for months but the trend is clear, so I really think it's time to brace yourselves... our hobby insofar as keeping these dinosaurs operating and looking good will be far more difficult. Cosmetic and mechanical parts have mostly been obsolete for some time now, but when electronicl parts are gone, then it's bad news indeed.

We may now be entering an era where creative restorations or customizations become more common as existing parts are no longer repairable.

sadly --i agree -

soon we will be retrofitting laptops in our boxes -

or just DVD type players

I agree, but I would guess those parts will be around for a long time since they are being used in newer consumer electronics :hmmm:

ira its more like custom amps maybe custom tuners built to replace the parts that we may never find parts for ,, :sadno:

Or music search controllers, tape controllers (ala JVC M90), dolby decoders, tuner front ends or combo AM/FM combo IF amps and/or mixers, varicaps, diodes, LCD displays, especially the large panel proprietary varieties, clocks, alarms, etc.

As usual, Ramon is the only one that gets it...

Lately in the news there have been alot of chatter on how todays electronics don't last as vintage products did. It's sad too see such companies close down shop as these electronics nowadays have a shorter life span.

THIS FREAKIN" SUCKS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! :annoyed: :'-(

Todays electronics are becoming freakin' beta, woofsified bunch of girlie men. Okay lets sport out the cobys bitches! :-D

Actually, that is only partially true. Most modern electronics are far more reliable than vintage electronics due to improved manufacturing techniques, quality control, material selection, technological changes in design, improved coatings, etc., but when they do fail, they are typically throwaway as compared with vintage stuff which can be repaired down to the component level. Anyone working on all transistor radios know that they are not nearly as dependable as IC's which rarely fail and settings/values do not deviate as much nor do they require periodic adjustments like transistor circuits do. As for the mechanical portions like tape decks and CD's -- yes, they are not constructed nearly as well, particularly since far more plastic was used. Keep in mind that modern electronics probably use anywhere from 20 to many hundreds times more components than older electronics so there is exponentially more chances of a single component failure, yet even with far more components, the MTBF is probably much higher than vintage stuff.

So yeah, old stuff lasts longer because you can repair them at the component level.
New stuff lasts only as long as the first failure, after which the whole thing becomes disposable if a new module is not available.

if we all had these --we could all make our own parts :-)

Problem is the IC or transistor you make with that cool tool might look right but probably not work right.
