This is my second boom box after a long time .I first had a philips cubic compo(without fm stereo /all black) bought by dad some time in 85/86 and i used that till the late 90s. I always wanted to buy a good system with bass i dont like em 2.1(too much bass /no mids) etc always interested in 2 channel stuff. so decided to buy a JVC gx-68 ,but they are off the shelves.Only some sony and philips are there now in the micro segment with very less power.
Had listened to a similar panny at a friend in the mid 90s, was impressed .I was just surfing and found a person selling it for 30$ (great condition). Never thought i will having it in 2012. :w00t:
Most of the people on boomboxery looks interested in 80S stuff . But why hate the 90s i am sure there were some great boxes that time and some good looking as well.I know about bad quality and stuff but even my 80s cubic compo had bad plastic. Lots of 90s boxes are missing i think, i use to watch them in shop windows thinking i will get them sometimes.
Ok a quick review.
Rx-CT 995 all things working except the decks they are not dead but all triggers are working. The recording deck get stuck up & the other plays in one direction but gets stuck sometime. I know i can easily get it repaired but i dont wanna mess with it .I am happy wit the line in and tuner. the remote works and there is also a mic with a broken wire i can easily fix it. Like the 4.4 pds its greaaat the treble stays , bass is good :superduper: . its like having two subs .Amazing bass for a plastic box.
No distortion at full volume. The bass is not boomy .the mids are just a bit less crispy but not that bad.I love the motorised volume knob.Great built quality.Battery life is ok if you want it to last long turn off the X-bass.
Looks like they really put lots of efforts in this one .there must be some reasons why they did not put 6" woofers .
This panny is here to stay.

Hi,

I agree that there are some really nice 90s boxes out there that don't get a lot of attention around here.

I've got the Pansonic RX-DT680 which is basically the same box as your 995 except it has a CD player, but no dolby and no Line In. There a few other differences too like your's has the tuner preset buttons of the front panel. With the 680, you have to use the remote to quick step the presets.

They've both got loads of bass - probably the strongest bass I've heard in a portable DC powered boombox. The plastics quality isn't quite up to the level of the late 70s/early 80s boxes but the sound quality and convenience of full remote control operation, full logic decks and digital tuner with presets make up for that.

They run really nice on 10 D cells too with no loss of output. They are well thought out too with regards to the UI. To protect the batteries, if you are running it on DC mode, you have to press/hold the power button to turn it on. When on AC, a quick press-release turns the unit on. It also won't turn on via the remote when on DC mode but works normally on AC.

They are underated boxes IMHO - you paid $30, I paid $50. Where else do you find a box with this sound output for $50 or less??

Congrats on a great find,

Here's a pic of mine: ;-)

Love this CT995...

I also have the DT680, but wish it had proper line in. Overall the 90s hasn't yet come back into fashion, but I'm sure it will in about 10 years time.

Thanks James,

Nice pic ! sorry about mine .For some reasons don't u feel sorry about the 680 not having line in, i know about the cd trick but u know....
But i know it must sounds great.Maybe some techy guy can put line in on it u know lots of people doing much weirder things. I don't use cds nowadays. I copy songs to my Micromax mobile (with a built in yamaha amplifier :-D ) and play through line in. About the battery thing i dont know about holding the power button i will try at home. For using it on batteries i just pull out the power chord from the back . that all i know as i couldn't find any thing in the user manual.

ps. 680 woofer looks a bit whiter.

I've just noticed your left most equaliser acts as the Xbass control instead of being the 100Hz control. Does that effect the sound. That is definately a different arrangement from the 680 and the RX-CT990.

I've seen a schematic of a mod to create an RCA L+R input in the back which uses the tape deck circuit. You simply plug in your MP3 player into the new connection and it automatically works whilst on TAPE mode. If you have nothing plugged in, the tape players work normally - I plan on trying this mod on my spare 680.

I suppose Panasonic thought that with a CD player on board, the 680 didn't need an AUX IN?!
To date, I've been using a good FM transmitter with an IPhone and it works beautifully.

Yup it is the s-xbs slider instead of the knob in other models. This model seems like a karaoke special as it has mic volume knob in place of the s-xbs and also has been provided with a mic.It has only 4 equalizer ((stange)) but very effective. The less the better as i get confused with 7 equalizers and up .

wow always cool to see Panny making models above the flagship.. i have the CT-990.. and i love the death out of it.. even changed the LCD backlight color to a more cooler blue.. so interesting to see the XBS knob being turned into a mic volume knob.. and the balance sliders now a mic echo slider.. gotta love it.. out of all my boomboxes.. the CT-990 will be the only one i will keep forever..

actually your being robbed of even more bass.. instead of a 6 band EQ you only have a 5 band.. since the XBS knob isnt present..
