Panasonic RX-CT980

This thing is a power house 60W. I couldn't find the exact specs for this model but it has the BI wiring and 4 amps with 4 speakers. Not vintage sound but loads of Bass.

This has the factory RCA line input

The cassette mech is delicate be careful when disassembling. Turn the box upside down and lever the bottom out first to clear the plastic buttons from the metal levers. Must be reassembled same way.

The main drive belts are flat they were in good order as the auto stop was functioning correctly

The problem with this one was only the pinch rollers they were like a jelly baby. This is unusual as these normally go hard, probably because it's made in Singapore. I replaced these with new ones (knock the pin out) cleaned and adjusted heads.

There is also some handy volume trim pots for the left right channel for each of the decks. You can push a little gain on these and get you balance as well.

I found a picture of the Pinch Roller assembly, you can just replace the rubber roller.

Hi hopey, yes its a nice 3 piece Panny. The specs that I could find for it was for the one that consumes 55watts,not the 60w you have. The service manual says it puts out 20watts × 2 M.P.O. I guess that's maximum power output? I couldn't find what the true output(RMS)was per channel was. Probably the same as the Panasonic rx-dt680. Yours also has beautiful frequency response on tape playback, 30 to 17000Hz.When using Chrome(CrO2)tapes. These also have the dedicated line in so you can hook up any device(CD,MD,MP3)you want. Yours looks almost minty fresh too, nice score. Enjoy it.

No remote for that model. Manual deck with 'push in / push out' function selector switches.
Same amps and speakers as the 680. :-)

15 watts RMS per channel (11 watts RMS to woofer, 4 watts RMS to mids/tweeter).

Nice score. I'd honestly prefer working on a pair manual decks anyway - better chance of success! :-)

Could you please elaborate on:

"There is also some handy volume trim pots for the left right channel for each of the decks. You can push a little gain on these and get you balance as well."

for me, hopey? I have one of these models which looks about as minty as you'd get these days. I'm not technically minded so please be kind!

Thank you.

I have attached the service manual in the manual section. These are little Variable resistors that can be tweaked with a small screw driver after taking the fascia off the box. The louder the output of the cassette the less amplification needed so less distortion at higher levels.

How do your know the RMS values? the Manuals only show PMPO or MPO? The RX CT 990 has Auto Reverse and Remote but as you have indicated much more complicated to fix the decks.

It depends on which version of the service manual you're looking at:View attachment 32076
