I picked up this Panasonic today, at a local fleamarket for about $7,-

It didn't include a powercable, and the seller couldn't tell me if it would work, but I got it anyway.

At home I hooked it up to a powersocket and it started with radio noise immediatly, but I coudn't locate any broadcasts. The switch was still on MW, popped it to FM and it works just fine

After that, I tried a cassette. It won't play. Rewind doesn't work, yet I can Fast Forward.

It's also very dirty and has some paintstains on it. A small part of plastic on the top has melted, so I will just take it apart and fix it with putty & whatnot.

At the moment I'm on the prowl for a manual, but it seems like a nice first project, overall :-)

Congrats on the new box. They are easy to work on too. You just remove the screws at the rear, remove all the control knobs and open tape deck door. The whole front panel will then come off. The tape deck is held in by 4 screws. Disconnect the power supply, tape head, erase head cables and tape counter belt and just remove the tape deck. Flip it over and then with a little more dismantling you will have the belts out - a bit fiddly getting the main flat belt onto the flywheel but the rest are straight forward.

Have fun,

James
