Well I started the restoration process tonight and got pretty far .
I pulled it apart and I have to say I was very impressed with the build quality.
This Panasonic is very cleverly laid out and easy to work on.
There are some really nice quality 8 ohm drivers in this unit.
The magnets and voice coils are pretty big for a boombox. It also has nice crispy sounding 4 ohm tweets (not crazy about how these were installed see pics)
The tape deck is really well built and sounds great as well. All in all we are talking great quality components, no wonder this one is a sought after grail.
Anyhow onto my findings , who ever had this box before must have been a carpenter because it was loaded with saw dust inside.
The main and tuner boards were coated with saw dust and a little section of the main board was coated in what appeared to be soda.
This has had to be the filthiest box I have ever worked on in all my time in the hobby.
So the first thing I did was clean up the board with first a soft paint brush.
Next I used electronic cleaner on all the switches and the boards.
I Then followed up with some alcohol and cotton swabs to get all of the stubborn soda off and out of all the little crevices at the back of the board, this also speeds up the drying process.
I resolved the one and only functional problem with the radio which was the power switch.
The function selector on this box is a dual action switch which applies power and also switches the source.
Well the contacts that switch the power on were not making good contact so i carefully cleaned them with an emery board and then bent the contacts closer together so when the switch is in the on position the contacts rest on each other much firmer for a better connection.
After I got done with the electronics I pulled, cleaned and dyed the speakers , They are a nice dark black now.
Also I cleaned the front and rear cases really good along with all the chrome and speaker grilles.
After that I proceeded to polish all of smudges and fine scratches out of the clear parts the best I could and it turned out really good.
I use a three step system made by a company called Novus. This system is designed specifically for restoring plastics.
After drying everything out really good I re assembled the entire unit and all tested out great.
Things I have left to do.
1. Restore knob surfaces on three that are scuffed.
2. Find and replace two missing toggle switch caps.
3. Find and replace missing antenna.
4. Paint body, front has some dings and scratches and back is discolored and needs freshened up.
Well here are some pics so far .
Enjoy
