Well I started the restoration process tonight and got pretty far .
I pulled it apart and I have to say I was very impressed with the build quality.
This Panasonic is very cleverly laid out and easy to work on.
There are some really nice quality 8 ohm drivers in this unit.
The magnets and voice coils are pretty big for a boombox. It also has nice crispy sounding 4 ohm tweets (not crazy about how these were installed :nonono: see pics)
The tape deck is really well built and sounds great as well. All in all we are talking great quality components, no wonder this one is a sought after grail.
Anyhow onto my findings , who ever had this box before must have been a carpenter because it was loaded with saw dust inside.
The main and tuner boards were coated with saw dust and a little section of the main board was coated in what appeared to be soda. :-O
This has had to be the filthiest box I have ever worked on in all my time in the hobby.
So the first thing I did was clean up the board with first a soft paint brush.
Next I used electronic cleaner on all the switches and the boards.
I Then followed up with some alcohol and cotton swabs to get all of the stubborn soda off and out of all the little crevices at the back of the board, this also speeds up the drying process.
I resolved the one and only functional problem with the radio which was the power switch.
The function selector on this box is a dual action switch which applies power and also switches the source.
Well the contacts that switch the power on were not making good contact so i carefully cleaned them with an emery board and then bent the contacts closer together so when the switch is in the on position the contacts rest on each other much firmer for a better connection.
After I got done with the electronics I pulled, cleaned and dyed the speakers , They are a nice dark black now.
Also I cleaned the front and rear cases really good along with all the chrome and speaker grilles.
After that I proceeded to polish all of smudges and fine scratches out of the clear parts the best I could and it turned out really good.
I use a three step system made by a company called Novus. This system is designed specifically for restoring plastics.
After drying everything out really good I re assembled the entire unit and all tested out great.
Things I have left to do.
1. Restore knob surfaces on three that are scuffed.
2. Find and replace two missing toggle switch caps.
3. Find and replace missing antenna.
4. Paint body, front has some dings and scratches and back is discolored and needs freshened up.
Well here are some pics so far .
Enjoy

The scratches / blemishes were not very deep at all.
When they are you are looking at wet sanding and buffing.
Been there done that as well. not easy and very scary.
But can be done.
When i try to submit the post with the links i get a error that doesnt allow me to submit.
something about incorrect bb code??

ok - thanks frank -

sometimes --we can just buy and cut new plexi to fit - -
but in the cases where the factory original dial or meter plexi is formed or extruded--
then -- its WORK and some luck and --scarry is right :-)

Looking great Frank.
I agree with you about the stupid way that Panasonic fastens the tweeters, really cheap and lame. :nonono:
I guess a couple of screws was out of budget for Panasonic....... :dunce:
I'm restoring a Panasonic RX-5050 right now,and the tweeters are held in the same way as your RX-5350. :annoyed: :-/

The "before and after" pics of the board should win you some sort of award. That is absolutely amazing! I'm dumbfounded how you managed to get it that clean considering the condition it was in. Wow!

Wow!

Yep...

Wow!

Yeah Skippy I had to hot glue the tweeters back in good as new
The boards took me hours to clean Bobby I am so proud of them I almost hated to put them back inside  .
I am listening to it right now and let me tell you this box has presence.
It throws sounds clear across the room.
I am going to take some pics in the sunlight tomorrow and also take down some dimensions for the replacement antenna.
hopeful someone can hook me up.
I am also hoping to get those missing toggles. the only other panasonic that uses the same ones i think are the rx 5085???

Hi Frank-Absolutely beautiful-great restoration!!
I'm hoping to do something even somewhat close with my M-90!
Very nice condition-the back looks brand new!
I may have to try some of your methods on my M-90!
Thanks for the photos and have a great one-GB. :-) :agree:

Yes Frank, thats what I used on my RX-5350 and the RX-5050 Hot Glue,it seems to work fine.
I think the toggles from a RX-5150 and RX-5080 and the RX-5085 are all the same. As well as a few other models like my rare mini RX-D30 has the same toggles too . You should be able to round some up with no problems.

My goodness! :w00t:

How do boxes work with that much dust in them?!

In some of the pictures, it looks like black coffeee or some kind of tar has dripped over everythng on the boards......

The restored boards look wonderful.

Great restore job on this one.

The WGM saves one more box. YAAAAY!
