I just got a 5085, and wonder if there are any major differences between it and the 5080 and 5150. The 5150 looks like it's a few watts less power, and has a dc input jack. Do they sound much different? I've noticed the 5150's going for a lot more $ on ebay.

The 5150 in its hayday went for a little less than 5085 also :-O :hmmm:

Don't know about the sound as I have never been motivated to get either the 5080 and 5085. The 5150 has a timeless classy look, and in my opinion, more attractive. In fact, the higher price of the 5150 is probably reflective of that impression. It also has soft-touch type tape controls compared with manual controls for the other 2. Although it might be more powerful (I don't know that for sure), don't fall under the trap of presuming that the watts consumption label in the back of boomboxes translates to higher output power. One stupid Aimor I owned advertised some ridiculous 61w (or something high like that) power input at the label but sounded weak as a palm sized mini. Input power does not necessarily translates to output power potential, just as putting a bigger battery into your pinto does not turn it into a mustang.

What do you think about the sound of your 5085?
I used to have one and loved the ambience sound, it was a great medium volume box and it looked great.

Well, I bought the 5085, so it should be in the mail. I have a 5050 now, and it sounds pretty good. The 5050 is a great mid-size box, but the 5085 has bigger woofers, so I expect a bit more bass.

baddboybill, how much did the 5050 go for back in the day?

Do you mean the 5080  I only have the info on the panny's on the pic there and maybe info for 5100 and 5010 ;-) But for the 5050 you can probably figure around the $200 price range because of EQ :hmmm:

Sweet! Those 2 look great side by side. I had both before, but had to make room for other boxes.
I think the 5050 is a way louder box, that thing is a scream machine! But the sound quality of the 5085 blows it away. The 85 will have better bass but not will lose it at high volumes.

:agree: Used to have the 5050 and just picked up the 5085, I prefer the sound quality of the 5085 but the 5050 is no slouch plus it's an easy carry box.

I've had the a couple of RX-5080's before, they sound really nice especially for only having a tone control I really love the look of the RX-5080 the best. :w00t:
But I think the best sounding one of the bunch is the RX-5085,it sounds fabulous........
The RX-5150 was kinda a let down in the sound catagory, but it has a great classic look and features.
The RX-5050 is LOUD!!!!! and it is great on batteries and a great sized unit to carry around.
Just my 2 cent :surf: ........
