Hello everyone! I bought this Panny 6 years ago in my senior year in high school, used to bring it every other Friday and bump tunes all over the school. Now it's finally starting to go out. The speakers distort badly once it goes over 30% volume. So I figured it's time to change out the speakers. I'd like to upgrade the speakers if I can, get ones with a bit more oomph, but I'm not sure what to look for. I know about matching ohms, watts, diameter etc. But how can I determine what the boombox can handle? How much bigger/louder can I make it go? And what other upgrades can I do to it? Maybe make the bass a bit boomier if I can? I apologize if these are simple questions, I don't know much about speaker repair and tech. Appreciate any help.

First off,let me say to you welcome to Boomboxery!I hope your gonna stick around for a good while. Not just join up to get a few answers an then split. Also it would be cool if you post a few pictures of your boombox.
One other thing about your replacement speakers is the depth of them. You don't wanna get a replacement set and then find out they won't seat properly. If your a electronic guru then you can find all sorts of new age mini amps and solder them into your b.box. If your a regular Joe then finding a replacement pair will be fairly easy.Just search on eBay for vintage b.box woofers that someone has extracted from other dead and dyeing boomers. If I'm not mistaken, and I could be.The Panasonic Rx-5050 pumps out about 7.5watts per channel. So look for woofers that take that amount or just a bit higher.Say 10 watts each or so.Nikonfoo on eBay has many b.box woofers, hope this helps you out.Once again welcome.😁

If speakers are distorting there could be other issues like dirty switches or pots and record bar. I would clean it up on inside and clean all switches, pots, record bar etc.... Before you replace speakers. 😉

So I used contact cleaner on all the switches and dials and... it sounds great again! Thanks again for the help! But I think I might still upgrade the speakers in the near future. Could I wire a mini-amp (like one of these http://www.ebay.com/itm/LP-2020A-Lvpin-Tripath-Class-T-Hi-Fi-Audio-Mini-Amplifier-with-Power-Supply-/281363032899?hash=item41828b2b43:g:5nEAAOSws65TnpCy )onto the existing electronics in the boombox, or would I need to scrap all the original stuff? I'm currently planning to remove the cassette deck and put in a Raspberry Pi and a 5-inch touchscreen to turn it into a portable jukebox, and I plan to wire the output to the cassette line so I can retain the radio and line-in functions.

I wouldn't but there's not much room in that box but check out post by Lasonic920 titled louder blaster 🤔

I wouldn't do that either. Its a classic box, why fix what doesn't need fixing? Get yourself a new Lasonic btq and you can pretty much hookup all sorts of devices via Bluetooth or memory stick,SD card or line in. It has a built in FM tuner and 15 watts per channel. Check it out.
