By way of introduction I will tell my boombox story and how I ended up on a website dedicated to... boomboxes, who would have ever thought. What a great time to be alive when you can find a community of like minded individuals for just about anything. I'm a HiFi guy. My home system is a Naim setup. In 1998 I went looking for the best boombox I could find. In Seattle their were a number of stereo outlets and options to choose from. I eventually came away with a JVC. It was OK. I was not, and still am not well educated on the topic. Along the way I became a stereophile and never really thought a boombox could be much of anything other than a decent noise maker. Nonetheless, loving sound systems of all kinds I could never resist checking out the charred remains found in second hand stores. Someday, I thought, I might come across a hidden treasure. Well, a couple years ago a Panasonic DT-680 caught my eye. The first thing I noticed was how nice the unit looked. Not fancy, but it seemed to exude quality. From Panasonic? That's weird, I thought. The home systems and car systems I had heard were typically horrendous. I'm not a HiFi snob but Panasonic was always the bottom of the barrel. Well, maybe Kraco. Anyway, I was intrigued. I reached over to pick it up and had to pause and re-assert my lift. This thing was HEAVY, for a boombox of its size. Now I was hooked. I had to hear it. The speaker wires were all messed up, and confusing. Bi-Wired? On a boombox?? What was I getting myself into? There was no chord so I had to rob one from another unit that didn't quite fit right. I found an outlet and plugged it in. Found a station with decent reception and turned it up. Wow. I couldn't believe my ears. I turned it up louder, I couldn't help it. The louder I turned it the better it sounded. I had to find out what this thing would do. I was painfully aware the giant second hand store was being rocked by Led Zeppelin but I just had to hear it to believe it. Of course, I got in trouble, told to turn it down, frowned at. But it was worth it.

I paid $30 for it. Maybe it was $20, I don't really remember. When I got it home I found the CD player was picky about what it would play. Had to tilt it too. It skips and sometimes won't play at all. I was really bummed. I've tried researching but have had no luck. That's why I'm here. I've noticed the DT has a few fans on this site and I'm hoping someone might be able to give me some tips. I've cleaned the lense, made sure the clamp spins free, but no luck :( If anyone knows someone or has any ideas, I'd love to hear about it.

Thanks for reading,

Todd

Welcome! Yes it's true, Panasonic never made great home hifi gear, but in the portable category their boomboxes were some of the best quality. Especially the RX-7200, RX-5350, and RX-XE520.
Your RX-DT680 is no slouch either. Surprising bass from such simple plastic-walled speakers.
But wait until you hear a Telefunken Studio 1

Start by cleaning, If you can, get at the cd player mechanism and clean all of the rails which the head runs along. The grease on those often goes hard and can and will affect the smoothness the head mech needs. There may also be a small belt, replace it.
And welcome aboard.

Thanks everyone. I guess I'll head over to the Tech Talk section and see if I can rustle up some more thoughts on the malfunctioning CD.

Great to hear your story.
Panasonic sold their quality home systems as Technics.
When it comes to enduring life, no other brand comes close to Panasonic.
