Hi all..newbie here...Im a session musician who happens to love my 680 & 690 ive owned since the 90's...However they do sound different and have a few different features...Ive always wondered if one was valued more than the other, or their pros and cons?... for me anyways; i miss the bal. control that the 680 has-(great for working out guitar parts/channel splitting)...680 has more low end,but 690 is crisper on the high end,but lacks some low end.......I like em both, and keep getting them serviced, but whada ya all know of these two boomers?.......(im enjoying reading all the posts!) :-)

You will find that most on this site love the 680. To my ears it has more low end bass and more power than the 690. I wish the 690 had not used those piezo tweeters, because with a true 3 way speaker system the sound would have been nice!...and Welcome to the site... :-D

Welcome!

Both are good boxes, but Mel is right, the 680 hits harder low down.

Although they are three way speakers in the 690, the 680 just sounds smoother....IMHO.

But, then again, I prefer my M70 and FH boxes over both any day. :dunce:

welcome --

we like to A/B everything around here --- :-D
often the results are surprising .. :-O

and as much as we love to look at and operate our old classics--

many of the top end 90s boxes can sound alot better than
our 'back in the day' stuff .

Thanks all for the responses!!!!!!!!...ive been reading my specs sheet on both these and I see it takes a heck of a lot more power to run the 690..hummmm.......but i do agree, the 680 is nice on the ears all around.....I was in highschool when it came out, and mowed a lot of lawns to save up for it.......Heres a little trick we found out that works in our recording studio...if our recordings/demos dont sound good played through the 680 or 690( whether its tape or cd),they almost usually never sound good in a customers car or home system...,.so these 2 boomers have become valuable around the studio here,.. and theyre 25 - 30 yrs old!!!!!....people get a kick out of seeing these "old" boomboxes sitting on the console next to the 45,000.00 protools system!!!.. ............( still would love to hear more bout the 680 and 690!!!!).....

LittleB, if you didn't know...

There's a little trick you can use to play a line-in device using the Line Out on the 680.

1) Hook up an iPod, or some other audio device, into the Line Out

2) Insert a blank CD-R or data CD into the CD player of the 680 and press PLAY

3) Press PLAY on your iPod and enjoy sweet line-in music

:-D

that, i did not know..thats neat.....ill try it sometime.......this site reminds me a lot of 2 other sites I belong to: The Boogie Board( mesa/boogie amps), and Rig Talk( all things guitar & amps)......I love it that theres a boombox site like this!!!!!......so I reckon I should keep those 680"s and 690's runnin!!!......

I see the 990 is radio and tape only.Does this box have a different sound than the 680?..I wonder if the power output of the 680 is the same as the 990?( since they left the cd player out---more room for bigger transformer)...
