Painted speakers on my JVC DC33

Last month I purchased a JVC DC33 turntable boombox from fellow member skippy1969. Since then I have been wanting to freshen up the yellowish, aged look of the speakers to give it some new life and a fresh look. Well today was the day.

I carefully masked the plastic around the speakers, found a cap that fit perfectly over the dust cap, shook up some white primer in a can, and went for it.

I'm pretty happy with the way it came out. I was debating between a bright white and an off white, and decided to go with a bright white. Let me know what you think. Here's some before and afters...

Here's what I started with

The initial masking. After this I masked the rest of the speaker with paper and masking tape to avoid overspray.

Heres the end result

And back home next to the VZ 2000 :-)

Yea they are pretty dam bright now Lol, I usually like to keep things as original as possible, but I wanted bright white for some reason. If I get tired of the brightness I guess I can always tone it down to an off white later.

The VZ intimidates me Lol, I think I'm gonna leave that one as is.

Nice JVC. I can't wait to hear your thoughts on the effects (if any) painting has on the speakers' sound. Reason is I'm wanting to put the final touch to my near mintish JVC PC-5 (as per my current avatar) by painting its cones too but I'm concerned about the effects of the paint solvents on the foam if I should happen to get some overspray on the joins where the foams fit the paper, though I think that the speakers in that record player box might have textile suspension - PC-11 style - that can stand some paint?
I have to admit that I think VZ2Ks look weird with black woofers and black trim. But that's good weird, not bad weird, if you get me..

Thank you, this was the 1st time I've ever done this so it was a learning experience indeed. But my JVC is not minty like your PC-5, and my JVC speakers don't have the foam surrounds like most woofers so I went for it. And also my JVC sounds nice and clean, but it isn't a real BASS machine so I doubt I will hear much difference in the sound, but I'll keep you updated.

I kept the coat as fine and light as I could. I just sprayed a light mist from a distance over the speaker until all was covered.

I like the VZ's with the red speakers too, but I jumped on this one when I saw it. I love both of my turntable boomers.

As the resident homer for white speakers, lemme say job well done! My only difference would to have left the surrounds with the aged color as the cones really pop with the surrounds yellowed. :-D

Thanks man. I went back and forth trying to decide whether or not to leave the surrounds yellowed or not. I think it would have been easier to leave the surrounds "aged" if I would have used a brush instead of a spray can. But I was nervous to use a brush. I was afraid of slapping it on too thick. Its definitely a learning experience. I'm a sucker for everything OG, but these suckers are now WHITE as fresh fallen snow. The grills kind of tone down the brightness when they are on so its not so "in your face" I had fun though. That's what its all about :-)

It won't take to much time for that white to calm down, just grab a few platters and hit the street!

Holy FUc&!!! I just saw this thread. That looks sick like new white 'kicks' with the tags still on them. The only issue you may have is a stiff surround & primer isn't exactly a flexible coating but if you did real light mists, it might just work out good. I never realized those 55's had inverted cloth surrounds on their woofers....

Amazing job, SLO!!!

BEEEEEEOOOOYYYY!!!

Thanks bro! Yea they are no doubt...WHITE  Whiter than my new Adiddas. Yea I cant hear any difference in sound, it wast a bass machine to start with, but sounded pretty clean, and still does. I was nervous at first because of the type of surrounds on these woofers but I did keep the coat VERY light. Overall Im pleased with the look. Thanks for compliment Cpl ;-)

For sure, KILLER!!! Anyways, keep an eye on them as you play them. If the primer is a heavy 'build' type, it may crumble a bit & break up those fibers after a while so go light on them as you break in the new skin on top. If you do that for a good few months, I think you'll od fine & they look sharp as razor, brotha!! I can tell from here they look virginal. :angelic:
