That's just the how much consumer level electronics cost back then, the cost of manufacturing has dropped quite a bit over the decades.
Those are also probably MSRPs.

Anyone remember the original price of the pan you rx-5050 ?

I thought it was over $200, but can’t remember an exact price.

Not a Boombox, but my Zenith Trans-Oceanic D7000Y had an MSRP of $270 when it was first introduced in 1968. That would be the equivalent to $2,000 U.S. Dollars today. My unit was made in 06/1971 (according to the copyright date of the logs & charts booklet) and a unit around that date would be worth $1,700 today. Got mine on eBay for $262 including shipping and taxes.

Hi

I bought a Sharp GF 767 in a Hi-Fi store, can't remember name (had an upstairs and down) Tottenham Court Road W.1 London in 1982.

Couldn't stretch to the GF 777Z as that was £300

Paid £225 for the GF 767, was earning £60 a week at the time.

Still have box, needs pot's cleaning - belts etc which is on my to do list.

Now have the 777 x 2 - 909 plus numerous other makes - models.

GF 999 -1000 still on wants list.

Prices are still pretty much relative although not new...

Now that is a radio. Back when the US made stuff that was superior to most other brands.

Why yes, uses point-to-point wiring and has socketed Silicon transistors too!

Power Output is 500mW into 8-22 Ohms @ 12V with 10% THD. Output stage is a diode biased class-B PNP-NPN Push-pull complementary symmetry matched set. Speaker is a single 4" x 6" full-range with a folded paper surround, lightweight ribbed paper cone (for a distinct breakup and brighter treble), AlNiCo magnet (w/common rectangular housing) and felt dust cover. Measured 22 Ohms @ 400 C.P.S.20200717_212323.jpg
