Oral Surgery Today -- guess what I did to relax?

Childhood accident lead to infection,
which lead to root canal,
which makes tooth brittle and fragile,
which required $1100 cap,
which leads to cracked tooth several months later....

Now requires $850 root amputation surgery. Had surgery today and they had the gums peeled all the way back to perform the surgery. During the surgery, there was lots of blood, drilling, pulling, yanking, cutting, and other stuff that makes it difficult for the mind not to begin imagining the procedure and the traumatic things the surgeon was doing to me and thereby causing elevated blood pressure.

Guess what I eventually had to do to relax? Closed my eyes and diverted my focus on how I was going to approach my next boombox project and the upgrades and repairs I was contemplating. I guess I've got the boombox bug good, don't I?

SD -- i thought ??? a heavy dose of novicaine removes all the pain and anxiety
or some other potent 'knock-out' drug ????
------------------------------

here is my own related story about 'box love'
2 weeks ago --i had a choice between a $950 root canal
(ritzy Palm Beach County price) :sadno:  :-D
and a $200 extraction --

needless for true boxes lovers to ponder it much - :hmmm:
the $750 difference is worth some great grail !!!

so -- slam-dunk -
i went for the $200 yank

and thus -- traded my tooth for a boombox !!!!!!!!!!1

I did the exact same thing Ira. Root canal $1000 Plus or extraction $150.
Sorry for the suffering SD. Get well soon :-)

It's a front teeth so yanking wasn't really an option since subsequent implant will cost $3000. I wanted to do everything possible to save that tooth even though it's not really going to be a functional teeth, it's more going to be fore cosmetic purposes.

Yanking, I'm told, will eventually cause the adjacent tooth to shift affecting the bite.

RBJ: Novacaine may anesthesize the area so you can't feel pain. But the mental anquish from watching all the tools being used, the pulling, the noise of the drills, the burning smells, thoughts of the gums being stretched wide open....

Yep, it sucks when you have to smell yourself burning and all. I bet I have at least 10 root canals.
Its just a losing battle for me.

I feel for you SD, I had a root canal on one of my incisors when I was a kid. I had to go three times to the dentist for it, thank god they don't do it that way anymore. :nonono:

Years ago my dentist wanted to pull two wisdom teeth then have me come back a few months later to have the second pulled and all under a local anisthetic. I told him hell no I want them all out at the same time and under a general anisthetic which they did.

Actually, I've had 2 root canals in the past year and none in the first 47 years. I guess age is catching up with me. However, the root canals were nothing compared to this. The procedure today was an apicoetomy or root amputation. In this procedure, the gum is cut open using a L shaped incision, then the gum flap is folded open to expose the jawbone, which is partially removed to expose the root, which is then removed and the void filled with a bone graft. I would characterize a root canal procedure as similar to a much involved tooth filling. This is definitely surgery.

Just reading about your procedure made me shiver! :-O :-O :-O

My dentist tells me to lay off the energy drinks. Of course I don't listen. :-P

I'll pay some day for it... :dunce:

No freakin way man, you did this under local anisthetic? You definitely need to find your happy place for this.

I was trying to read SD's first post and passed out on the floor. Just reading that stuff gives me the heebie jeebies. Dentists are of the devil. However, boomboxes are always a good way to pass the time while healing.
