I got my second RX-5400 few days ago and I thought this model deserve few paragraphs as it's one of the bigger boxes that people doesn't talk about much (maybe it's quite rare outside of Japan?). My first boombox purchase was also a 5400 two and a half year ago, and this model is for sure one of my most favorites.

Some basic information can be found on this Manual guide.

RX-5400.gif

- It's a Japanese domestic Model, with Japanese letters but the FM goes to 108. It has soft touch mechanism

Good things about this model (to my personal taste and observation):

- Very well built: not very heavy for its size (around 7kg) but the whole box is very sturdy, the plastic case is quite thick and strong. Every knobs and buttons feel firmly. Both 2 boxes I have is working without any small flaws.

- Have quite a lot of features: Auto-manual level control, music search (works great), mic mixing, tape speed adjusting, loudness.

- Excellent radio reception: one of the best among those boxes I have.

- Sounds really good: I did compare it to my Aiwa CS-80 (TPR-955) yesterday and it's very hard to tell which one sound better. Maybe the Aiwa is a little bit better with more high but the 5400's sound is almost as lovely as the Aiwa's.

- Simple but smart three function switches: I'm still banging my head every time I want to switch from tape to line-in mode on many other models. Why the hell do they put the Radio mode in the middle when there's only one switch. Radio is always the loudest source and how do I need to blast my ears just wanting to switch to my tape mode???

- It looks fabulous to my eyes. I will talk about this later.

Bad things:

- It doesn't have any meter. A bit strange for this kind of size.

- It'll distort a lot when volume is above 5.

Yeah, the look: I like it more than my Aiwa, the sharp 9494, the Toshiba S90, The National 5700 and many many other ones. My parents even think that it looks better than all other boxes in my collection, includes the RS-4360.

Back to two and a half year ago when I made my first boombox purchase. At that time I had completely NO ideas about how good, how rare, how worth of any boxes that was offered on my local website. I was search for all the boxes that was in my price range then I choose the one that looks most beautiful to me. Few days later, my first 5400 arrive at my home.

I often look at it in silent, trying to figure what make it so much attractive to my eyes. So here're few things that I can point out:

- It has nearly perfect size (to me of course): almost the same as the RX-5700 and a bit large than the M70 (I guess)

- It has striking attractive front look: It does actually look much more attractive than in the picture, especially under Neon light at night It looks and shines amazing. Great combination of gun-metal color case with great amount of shiny metal and chrome-coated parts, great contrast.

- It has very eyes catching design: clean layout, nice square grills, shiny round parts around speakers, again strange but awesome tweeter covers. And what else? Look at those sexy straight lines, very long tuner window goes all the way from side to side, and almost every parts was in rectangular shape. Looking right from front side, that just looks very strong and masculine.

In compare to its close brother the RX-5600, this look many times better to me. I repeat: It looks much more attractive as It does in picture. In my honest opinion, you guys all should consider to look for one of that.

Feel free to give your opinion. Thank you very much for reading.

Few pics, two top are my first one, two bottom are my newer one.
