Hey guys,

Just got myself a Crown CSC 850L off of ebay, I always liked the look of these 850's :-)

Collected it off the guy on Friday, he sold it as not working as the tape deck didn't work at all and the controls where horribly scratchy, but I thought I would take a punt.

Got it home and opened it up to find that the belts had turned in to black goo and covered the back of the tape deck, I didn't take any pictures of the horror show as I quickly became covered in the stuff and didn't want to get it on my phone.

Anyway, after a lot of cleaning, experimenting with belts, and adjusting the pot on the motor it came back to life and sounded great!

I then cleaned down the boards with contact cleaner and washed out the control pots with it too, after many hours work it was working perfectly!

Now its just cosmetic work, the cassette door is scratched so will need to be buffed out, if you guys have a good way of doing this I would love to know.

The tape door is aluminum with a bit of clearcoat over it. You can use clearcoat polish, but if the scratches are deep you will need to keep rubbing until the clearcoat is gone, at which point the door will look more like polished aluminum. But maybe you might like it that way.

Yeah, the scratches are deeper than the clear coat, so I'll have to rub it down to the aluminium, that's fine though I don't mind, it will look better having a uniform surface.

You can also buy some brushed metal vinyl wrap , the surface has to be pretty smooth but not perfect .

Yeah, I'm enjoying using it, I have it at work at the moment and play mixtapes on it and people love it! To be fair the physical condition is pretty good, the only major problems are the scratches to the cassette door and the dents in the speaker grills, relatively easy fixes. :-)
