So I've been lurking on the site for a few weeks now and I decided to officially introduce myself. My name is Howie and I'm totally new to the hobby. I'm a 38 year old history teacher that grew up in Hollywood in the 80's and almost everyday walked on Hollywood Blvd wishing I could have one of the cool Boomboxes that were in the store fronts of the various electronics stores along the boulevard. Well it took me a long time but I finally got one. About a month ago I bought a Rising 20/20 off of Craigslist for $200. It was in good working condition but it was dirty as hell. I've spent countless hours taking 30 years of grim off of it. And although I'm not really handy, I was able to open it up and also clean it and lube all the connections from the inside. And when I put it back together it still worked! That may not sound like much, but considering that my expertise is in lesson planning, lecturing and motivating teenagers, that was quite an accomplishment for me. I'm kinda hooked now and although I'm not planning on starting a big collection, I'd love to attempt to make other old beat up boomboxes look and sound better. I'm really impressed with the work and knowledge that is on this site. I've contacted a few members regarding issues with my Rising and they have been so helpful. I look forward to contributing to the site and learning from all of you.

Here are a few pictures of my Rising 20/20:

Yeah, everything is working! Sounds good and I take it to school all the time. The kids love it and the adults do too. In fact, those pictures with the graffiti background were taken at school. I never realized how much attention and smiles these boomboxes attract.

Great looking box Howie and cool story.

In a culture of musical introverts, people are surprised to hear music...shared for everyone...LIKE IT IS A NEW CONCEPT!

Your 20/20 looks fantastic. I have a shorter list than I used to, but this one is still on it.

Welcome to the forum!

Thanks for the warm welcome guys. And unfortunately I'm not in Hollywood anymore. Back in '94 during my senior year of high school, the Northridge Earthquake left my building red tagged and I had to move with family in Orange County. Been out here ever since, but my heart is still in Hollywood. I try and get out there as much as I can. There's no place like home!

Excuse my ignorance but what is "beat swapping" and where and what is the "Container Yard?"

I just posted the info in the General section.

Beat Swap is a cultural street event with vendors selling and trading vinyl and cassettes as well as clothing and other stuff.

It also features dancing competitions, live DJ battles and very loud music. We have been going down there as a group and blasting our radio's. It's one of the few places you can get up on the volume knob and no one cares.

BUT, I guess there were some noise complaints at the last one from local Chinatown store owners (you can blame Peter, Adrian and myself), so they moved it to the Container Yard.

I'll be there with the fam, If you go, bring the Rising and some FRESH D batteries! Its in downtown L.A. in the Arts district, its kid friendly too so if you have kiddos you can bring them along for some street culture  You can Google Beat Swapmeet or The Container Yard and theres all the info. Or check out the post that Chris threw up  Its a good time

Great story, even better pics, and the Rising is very high on the want list of most people. Congrats on the buy, and the clean up project, and welcome aboard. And now let the madness commence haha

Looks pretty good in your pics, why do you want parts for it?
I just picked up another Rising on eBay yesterday and it's in rough condition. I'm looking for two antennas, two cassette tabs and a button on top. Can't wait to start working on it.

Cool....Hey everyone, Howie is going to build a wall of 20/20's

Start a thread in the Parts section! Hopefully someone has a parts box and have those parts!

If not, hook up with the Science department and get some Mold making Curriculum going! :-D

SHOW OFF! :nonono:

Look away Howie...don't get pulled in with it's absolute beauty. Don't start down the path, the quest to find this ultra rare Rising. It has driven many a man to the brink of their sanity. Blu_Fuz is one of them!
