Hi Guys,

Just scored a relatively cheap local Sharp GF series box!! :-)

Hoping it’s a good one - looks in good condition in the photos.

Details to follow tomorrow morning after pick up. :-)

Sorry, no hints apart from saying it has twin antennas!

James..... :-)

I'm also picking up a mystery GF, I'm really hoping it's not the same one......

Jimmy I've sent you a pm.

Sorry about the delay guys. I had to pick up a new Toyota this morning and then head off on a 75km round trip to pick up the new Sharp GF. And yes guys, it’s a good one - needs a full & thorough clean up but it’s all there.

And drum roll.....................................
No, it’s not a GF-9191, it’s one of those pesky GF-9292s. Oh well, I’ll just have to put up with all the extra bling!

As found:

It’s a ‘one family radio’ - the seller’s recently deceased father bought it new and loved it. I assured her the Sharp would get the full treatment and will live on!

The seller was asking $120. She accepted my offer of $100 and the deal was done. :-)

Restoration / clean up details coming soon. :-)

Awesome looks brand new worth every penny my first guess was it was going to be a 9696 my second guess was going to be in 9292 but I didn't want to say anything because I wanted to see if I was actually right and by some f***** up miracle I am lol.

Even though the guesses I had I was keeping to myself I still was hoping you would be a badass GF 777 or something like that but still that's a great score.

Thanks man. I recently sold my JVC RC-656 waffle box to a guy at work who was keen to get a Boombox with a good playing tapedeck. He’s not a collector but he does have an extensive tape collection he compiled back in the day.

I sold it to him cheap ($100) to help him out - so with $100 burning a hole in my pocket, the 9292 was the perfect antidote.

He’s a pic he sent me today showing me his new score:EEBC8579-8B99-43D3-95B7-5558FB435A7F.png
With the current prices, I don’t think I’ll ever be able to afford a 777! :-)

Yes, love the 9292, the flashier brother of the 9191. Great score Jimmy, love these one owner boxes.

That’s a good example Jimmy. They’re a good looking box.

There’s one at my tekkie’s place that’s been there for ages. Customer hasn’t responded to estimate. It’s rough but I’m waiting it out.

Well I cracked the 9292 open and the good news it looks like I’m the first person to open it up since 1980. :-)
No busted screw posts, no cracked case (unlike my previous 9292). The amp sounds strong and balanced. The tuner is fine on all bands but of course, the deck is a no go. (Not for long) :-)

The best feature this box is the front auxiliary input no having to spin the Box around looking for the inputs.

Hi Guys/gals,

Geoff in Japan came through with a good deal on a set of new deck belts for the 9292 so today is the day to pull this old girl down ready for some deck maintenance. :-)

The front cover came off nice and easy and here we are ready to pull the deck.5A305EA4-D23B-4D24-BF01-D6F5FFA9444C.jpeg
The tuner dial has to removed next. The top panel doesn’t need to be disturbed to pull the deck. 4 screws, two connectors and one wire and the deck is free.
I always wondered why I couldn’t hear the motor running - well here is why: :-)

The two square belts looked ok at first glance but were stretched and flat spotted.
I got to work cleaning off the old white grease that was clean but sticky.

I used Nanolube 10 weight to lube the motor shaft and other moving parts. You only need a tiny amount to restore function.

The clear tubing Geoff provided in the kit worked great too. It’s a little softer than the tubing I’ve used in the past.

After cleaning the record bar, the deck went back in and after replacing the front cover, it was time to adjust the head and get some hours on the newly serviced deck.

A quick de-mag and we’re done:

The deck output is balanced with nice highs and bass. As per any successful deck service, the deck sounds superior to the FM stereo tuner.

So she’s now fully working and I must say I’m chuffed to have scored this previously unmolested box. It’s getting harder all the time to find cheap boxes that haven’t been messed with.

Have a great weekend guys/gals,

James..... :-)
