Hi Boomboxery Members,
I am new to the forum and to the pursuit of things boom boxy. I remember the '80s with great fondness. I never had a large portable stereo like some of the iconic (expensive) ones. Now that I am more than grown, I thought I'd get something interesting. I am sure there are forum posts about this for noobs, but do any of you have suggestions for decent starter stereos that are not priced more than my car? Thanks for welcoming and for any advice.

Welcome! If you can do basic DIY I recommend getting second hand 'spares or repairs' boombox that can be mended, they usually require only the rubber belts replacing., just like this JVC 656 that cost less than £15 and came up like new!

Just got a JVC PC37 from a Salvation Army seller on Ebay. FM works great, cassette play works great. FF and REW do not work. I guess I'll have to open her up and see what's missing. It was $50 plus $25 in shipping. I have a JVC PC-5 coming which is supposed to be fully functional. It was not $50. It was a good bit more. Hopefully no repairs to be made there. I will try to keep updated here!

Ha! I love the vintage tennis player/boombox mash ups. I am the boombox enthusiast and my wife is the tennis player. Lots of fun. The PC 37 turns out to have an intermittent "won't eject" problem, but the PC 5 is darn near perfect. I've created a couple mix tapes from Spotify playlists on my phone (weird) and the FM, AM, SW receiver is superlative. The sound quality is super. AND I get a little bit of a workout every time I move it. Yes, I put the 8 D-cell batteries in it, so it's right at 28.5 pounds (as measured on the bathroom scale, so plus or minus). I am really diggin the PC 5.

Right now I am planning on trying to repair the '37 for resale. Any resources for info/service manuals?
Thanks, folks. Much appreciated.
