Hey All,

New member here from Canada. Have been into walkmans for a while, and hi-fi equipment. Never really into boomboxes, except a cheap Citizen I owned back in the 80s. Got a proper stereo as soon as I could afford it and never looked back. Always been an avid cassette user, with tape decks running daily at home, and in two of my cars. Background is electrical engineering, and have worked on electronics as a hobby as long as I can remember.

Recently worked on restoring a Sony TC-100, replace all electrolytic capacitors and belts, replace cassette motor, rubber re-nu on pinch roller and idlers, etc. TC-100 sounds pretty good for a cassette deck from 1966, if you hook it up to an external amplifier. Took lots of work to get it to run at a constant speed.

Just picked up a Sony CFS-1000 boombox last week off kijiji for $10. Sounds decent, but it for sure a low end tape deck. No dolby, no chrome capacility, and very cheap and lightweight speakers. Have been enjoying just carrying it to different rooms, and playing music - makes me want more and better! So I ended up here.

Welcome Max. Start saving mate, this hobby can become addictive and expensive but also interesting, great fun and very rewarding.

Thank you for the welcome! I already had a look on eBay, and it's truly a sign of which generation currently has peak earning power, that relics of youth from the 80s are now becoing prized and valuable!

My intention is to lurk on here, and chip in technically where I can, until I figure out which model suits me best - then seek one out and restore it to new. I'll probably stop there, I don't want a wall of these things - but I do want a good one in perfect working order!

Well if technically able with this stuff then youve got the jump on alot of people who may pass something up because it needs attention.
I only wanted one, i got a 3 piecer, then i wanted a 1 piece unit to with it etc etc

Good luck in the search.

Anything 25 - 30 years old is going to need attention. Grease will be sticky, belts dry and stretched, electrolytic capacitors changed value, pinch rollers and idlers glazed over and possibly dried up. And that's just the effect of time, it could be worn from use too. Even if it "works", I don't believe any tape deck that old will run with perfect speed stability and reliability without some form of overhaul. I don't really want a basket case though!

I suppose you're right though about how hobbies can draw you in!
