Assembled in Nigeria? They're supposed to be made in Korea.
So Goldstar sent parts to Nigeria for final assembly?
I don't think Nigeria was known for that kind of work in 1983, but I may be wrong.

I did find a Daddybond there, but it says they were just a wholesaler, not a factory

Yes, I found that mention in Google books too. As you say listed as import, export, wholesaler... but are books like that always right I wonder.
The managing director was this guy: https://prabook.com/web/laxmidas_damodardas.vora/1418244 Still alive at 92 apparently.
I also found one ex-employee of Daddybond on Facebook - could always get in touch and ask him I guess. Maybe I'll post a pic of the insides later and we can compare with the Korean ones.

Thanks Reli.. quick work!
Just sent the ex-employee a message, so we'll try and get the definitive.

One difference I've spotted is the LCD clock. This one, apart from not working (I'm working on that) looks black. I think it's a kind of LED version - maybe to withstand the heat and sun better??

Not just Goldstar. A couple of years ago there was an M70 for sale on EBay in Europe somewhere and it had a picture of the back panel that clearly said it was made in Nigeria. The reason why I remembered this particular auction is because of that label and that it came with the red JVC carry hold-all bag thing.

Fantastic score by the way. Always good to see something different.

My clock is green, but it doesn't work. Maybe yours is black because the liquid leaked. Regardless, I've never seen a Goldstar with a working clock.

Hmm I bet it was one of those situations where the importer was trying to avoid import tax, so he claims it was assembled in Nigeria even though all they did was put the antennas on or the decals on, lol.

haha maybe... As you have a 581, while I'm here, can you tell me how to remove the clear acrylic dial screen? I've undone the 4 thumbscrews obvs, but the mic grills appear to be holding the ends in place, and for some reason they've been glued into the casing! Seems impossible now.

I've never done it, but I assume you would need to push out the tabs holding the screen or the microphones, from inside the case. Maybe use a heat gun first.

Some corrosion - came from a coastal area

So I heard back from a man who used to work at Daddybond. He told me they were a manufacturer of electronics, not a wholesaler. He also mentioned a couple of other brands that they used to make, namely Connion & Sharp.
