I was the proud owner of the this...

An impulse buy on eBay...managed to get a few tapes through it and then when it was plugged into the mains (set to 240v for UK power) and there was a bang and it’s now not powering up...Do I now have a very large paperweight?

Power up on DC Power. Once sold a Sigmatech ATP-520 to a dude in Italy, and the switch was set to 120v . He popped the transformer and I sent Him a replacement free of charge. The transformers are generic to a degree, In my Technidyne TD-7000 died and was able to replace through some due diligence. The Technidyne is the same as Hamsomic DK-7000 , Vela DK-7000 which at a time gone by the latter *gave away* to my brother as a Christmas gift , Also gave away my Rickenbacker Tom Petty signature electric guitar at a different Christmas, to my older brother . Whoever said if you love something , set it free, well, not feeling it at the moment.

Hi Chaps, thanks for the reply. I wasn't in the room when it went pop, my wife just said she heard a loud noise from it and that was that....

I will pop some batteries in it to see if we see any signed of life....really quite gutted as it was sounding good...

Might just be the Power caps as you said the voltage was set correctly. If so so it's cheap fix or just use batteries or DC supply.

So, are replacing the power caps and easy DIY fix?

Cheers

Chaps - quick question - for using DC power, is there a particular lead i need to but - I see it is 15v but is there any other specs or any 15v adapter from amazon?

If it went bang, once you open it up the capacitors near the transformer should appear damaged or swollen. You would need to use a soldering iron to remove and replace with same spec. For a DC power supply I would suggest 1.5 to 2 amp @15v an old laptop charger is a good solution and you can use a slightly higher voltage but not lower than marked on the box.

First check the fuse, you may got lucky!
Since it all works on DC, fuse first, then the diode rectifiers then caps then psu, is the checks id go with.
