Hey Modders & Box freaks!! It's your favourite Modder to hate for making such sexy DISCO boxes you all envy secretly!! Ha-ha!!

Just kidding, sort of... :-P

Anyways, as always, I'm out to improve the performance of my boomboxes, which includes speaker upgrades & cabinet tweaking if I find a certain model lacking in power or sound quality but don'w worry, this time the box is too rare to DISCO up like my more common grails like the M70, M90 & 777Z series...

On a side note, I've been on the Boomboxery FB page & more & more, other enthusiasts are taking up the LED torch & adding LED's, bluetooth & music reactive RGB systems, like I have. :-D YAY!!

Ok, now we have here a Prosonic PQR-9963, the 11 band, 4 speaker boombox with a very unique 4 speaker system that has 2 very stiff inverted cloth surround woofers & 2 excellent sounding 4.5" Mid/Tweeter speakers that look like woofers but are actually sealed basket, mid/high drivers.

Below are pictures of the unit as I received it, rusty grills & alll.... :-D

Here's a look inside...this thing is amazing!!

3 Antennas, built like a tank, 40w at the plug, soft touch full auto stop cassette, 11 bands, including 8 SW & a strong rigid cabinet with a hefty Aluminum handle. The only thing missing is good modern woofers, cabinet improvements for sound & maybe some roll bars to protect the front...

More to come... :-D

Here's a video of the Prosinic playing a great Jazz track. Notice the Mid/Highs have excellent dynamic range & presence but the woofers lack clarity & could use some bottom end extension....

Now that the listening test is complete it's time to improve the sound. I have some 4.5" Davinci woofers that are perfect for this application & I will show you what I did to prep the cabinet & install them in their new home....

Here's a couple of pics of the new woofers I used. You can see that they have massive magnets for their size...

Ok, the next step was to crack open the back of the case, 12 long screws & 2 small black screws to unscrew to remove the back cabinet peice. 1 RED 3-pin power plug & 3 antenna connections to disconnect & the back cover is off...

Now to add the new woofers & seal the edges with Dynamat, Rattle Trap dampener sheets around each woofer edge. Notice I had to swap locations between the Mid/High speakers & woofers so that the woofers are actually in the upper corner locations so that the large magnets can clear the cabinet internals & amp baord, etc. The Mid/High drivers are crossed with a 2.2uF Cap which @ 4 OHMS, rolls off at an extremely high 18000Hz but as you can hear, sounds very good at this crossover point. I was surprised at this...

They look great , speaker swaps are the best and easiest way to gain performance. But it helps if you know a lot about speakers and crossovers which it seems you do . rock on . one thing I can't stand is a wimpy speaker and them Basterd's got to go lol.

Thanx Floyd! Definitely a big fan of your upgrades over the years & your skills re-foaming, re-edging & re-coning are unmatched anywhere....This beast is definitely putting out quite a bit of power..I'm guessing about 10w per side, no joke..

Well, the next step in the improvements was to apply dead-mat & egg-carton foam to the rear cabinet, sealing the original vent slits on the back cabinet. The interior is HUGE compared to the sealed enclosure requirements for these small 4.5" woofers. This allows the woofers to work as if they are on an infinite baffle & they behave quite well in this environment without ratlling the shiat out of the internals so win/win so far...

Stay tuned.. :-D

I guess you and I develop the boxes over time the same way you can't just slap it together overnight and call it done I have boxes I've literally been working on for 10 years you know I mean I never called them complete cuz they never are but that's the fun of them they just keep getting better.

If you can, add a couple strips of Dynamat or Rockmat (cheaper) across the rear panel, underneath that foam. Not across the whole panel obviously, just a couple strips in a parallel formation, or maybe a plus sign, depending what you've got to work with. This will reduce resonance in the panel. Every box I've done this to has improved.

that looks stunning cpl, if it's ever for sale i may be interested Sir as this is on my wantlist
Thanx my friend! :-D It has a few scratches & the left VU is dead. The cassette has issues & won't come out of 'Pause' when the 'Play' button is engaged but man what a brute & a beauty too...even the 2 smaller antennas are uniquely beautiful with ball tips & can be pulled up slightly to clear the handle in all directions....

This is no Bass box like an M90 or Lasonic but it sounds so natural & accurate in the mid & upper ranges. The sound quality also carries quite well across a big room with plenty of power to fill the space with good music ..It just needed good woofers & some treatment to the cabinet so stay tuned, there's more to come.

Actually, the cabinet is so huge compared to the space requirements of such a small woofer that it acts as an infinite baffle & nothing rattles or resonates at all. I did add dead-mat to most of the back cabinet & underneath the egg carton foam already, as you have suggested. The cabinet is quite rigid & high quality so it does an awesome job of behaving when I pound out the bass on this beast but I will keep that trick in mind for other projects. I never thought of the plus sign or strips appplication so thank you for the tip...

Stay tuned....

Ok...so the next step before putting it back together was to remove the corroded grills & thoroughly detail clean the speaker sections & shine up that plastic chrome around the speakers...

I always enjoyed our exchange of ideas & experiences & believe me, as you said before, the WX-1 we talked about was quite the challenge to work on improving the performance of the speakers....In fact, my next project is to replace the original tweeters on the Tosh next with some Tympany dome tweeters since the originals keep cutting in & out due to a previous owner's abuse. They were always a bit dodgy & not working very well when I got it but seemed to work for a while..

Here's a couple of victory lap videos to give you an idea of the final sound of the MOD...

This blues track is a favourite of mine because the acoustic guitar recording is a very clean, full range test of the midbass & mid/high ranges. The blend of the new woofers & the original 4.5" sealed back Mid/High drivers really shines through....On axis performance may sound a bit bright in the upper midrange but overall, fills the room with a very natural & balanced sound...

This next track features a full range blues song that really shows the capability of the speakers to deliver a large soundstage with plenty of detail, presence & power.

Ok RR36, here you are, as requested...I'm still getting used to the absolutely insane amount of treble coming from the original Mid/High drivers & am still adding too much treble control but getting used to it quickly...the next video after this will have a more balanced sound as I get used to the controls & sound of this beast after it was upgraded...

Enjoy & more reggae to come...
