As many of you already know, I have two online homes. Boomboxery is (by far) my #1 and the other is http://www.tapeheads.net. Ebay & CL don't count. .
One of the things I really enjoy about tapeheads is that the guys there often organize a "travelling tape" which goes from member to member so we can compare recordings, share music, experience unique tape formulations and/or just to have some more stuff to discuss... There is always at least one active traveling tape going on.
I should also point out that a traveling tape is different from a tape swap in that the traveling tapes start off with one or two tracks recorded by the originator, who then mails it to the next member in line who will record a track or two onto the tape and mail it to the next member. That goes on unitl the tape gets filled up with music. Once full, the tape goes back to the tape donor who started the project.... As you can imagine, traveling tape projects can take a LONG TIME and the threads can get quite interesting.
The latest such project going on has an 80's theme and there is a "traveling tape pictue log" thread that was started as well, asking member to add some spice to the thread by shooting pics of the traveling tapes (if they want). While the guys at tapeheads are more into vintage component tapedecks, reel to reels, and home audio in general, there are also members there who have a keen interest in boomboxes and some of the better walkmans. Basically, if it plays magnetic tape, they have an interest. Some more than others...
So..., I got the tapes for the latest such project the other day and (in standard JT fashion) kinda went a wee bit overboard with my pics. Hey, I figure if I'm going to take tapes out of the house, I'm gonna listen to them!!!! Gotta spread the boombox love, right?
I has such a good time doing this, and since I incorporated a walkman and a boombox in my shots, I figured I shoudl share all of this with you guys, too. (got me thinking about some ideas for a Boombox traveling tape, and maybe a "boombox scenery" thread...
Anyway, on to the pics!
Here's a fantastic portable JVC I got from Ira. I used it to record one of the tracks onto the traveling tape. This deck makes unbelievably good recordings for a 1978 portable unit. Thanks for selling it to me, Ira. (I am selling the similar Sony unit I got from you to a fellow tapehead)
Here's my Nakamichi RX-505 on top of a Sansui SE-8X Equalizer...
And my Nak 582, supporting one of my Technics 1200 M3D turntables...
Here is the obligatory "in the Benz" shot, approaching downtown Tampa, listening to the tape in the walkman...
After Tampa, I had to go to St.Petersburg... where I drove out to the Pier marina area and snapped these shots. Here we have the Vinoy Hotel in the background...
And about 100 yards away from where the Vinoy pic was shot, I found a picnic table overlooking one of downtown's small beaches where, apparently, some of St.Pete's homeless population gather. St.Pete Pier is in the background...
This guy was fascinated by my boombox and even offered to go to the ATM to get money to buy if from me. But, the box is not for sale and I really didn't take him very seriously. I did ask him to hoist the box an pose for me, though... Best shot of the day! LOL!
And then, on the way home, I had to stop and shoot some pics with the skyway bridge in the background!
Apparently, birds like music too...
And one final parting shot with the spans of the Skyway, back to listening to the walkman again...
In case you were wondering, the tracks I recorded onto the tape were:
Grace Jones - The Fashion Show
The Eurythmics - Regrets
Yello - Call It Love
(All chosen because I like them very much and their incredible production quality)
