My Old Kaboom...15 Years Later

Alright, I know a lot of you guys hate the style on the Kaboom series. I, on the other hand, think the style is A.O.K. That's the main reason I bought one back in '98. The bass was the icing on the cake - some damn good icing.

For a couple of years I've been looking specifically for the original RV-B90GY to replace the one I left behind back in '99. I just didn't want to pay $200-$300 for one in good condition. It's not a matter of priciple, but rather a matter of poverty.

One of the first things I bought when I graduated high school was the RV-B90. I had to have it - couldn't live without it. I moved to Orlando, FL two months after graduation and met a girl. We moved in together and things turned sour shortly after (very cliche). I ended up getting my own place and moved out in the middle of a weekday, while the b!+ch was at work. I moved out in such a hurry that I completely forgot my prized Kaboom. There was no way of getting it back without going to jail, so I accepted the fact that it was gone.

Fast-forward 15 years, and I come across this CL ad for a B90 for a very fair price. Of course I bought it! It was pretty rough, but it was all there. The deck was dead and the door was stuck, typical gooey rubber parts. Nothing anyone here hasn't heard of.

I stripped the goo and painted all the formerly gooey parts flat black, serviced the deck, removed all the stickers, pounded out the dented grills, sewed (yes, I sewed) the shoulder pad back together, and gave it a good detail.

It just needs a new encoder for the bass volume, which I'm sure I'll deal with in the next several days. Notice I didn't strip or paint the bass volume knob. It was hastily glued together by the previous owner, so the d-shaft is kind of a mess. I will post another pic (to the dismay of many) when I address it.

'Nuff talk...

I'll call it another personal grail scored.

Wonder if that part you need is the same one from this iPod Kaboom. If you think it is it's yours my man. The knobs fit on my B90 so I put them there.

Let me know what to look for if anything.

Wow, what a story....I think this story could be told by many members, just change the radio model number!

Yet still, you kept the dream alive and did it right. You found THE radio and did a full clean up. Great work.

At some point I'm going to break out of my cage and get me a Kaboom.

Haha i agree. We all have some crazy stories around the boomblasters ( kabooms) . Thats the reason that i have 4 now and looking constantly to buy more for the right price  . And when powering the whole boombox wall the boomblasters are acting like subs in the very bottom. Actually this way the sound is pretty close to PA sound. Love that.

Boy, if there's one thing a Boomblaster can do it's rattle somebody's cage...
Music to my ears! :stereo:

Hmm...I wonder if my current girlfriend would be interested in getting in on some Kaboom action. :hmmm:
I really didn't mean for this thread to take such a turn for the dirty.

If I find an early Kaboom for the right price I will pick one up, but these early ones seem to be going up in value or they are completely trashed.

Like mentioned above, great subwoofer for the wall of boom!

If you find a B90 at a decent price, the sub grills and knobs are gonna be gooey. I've noticed a lot of people paint them, but a lot of those people also do not strip the rubber coating from the parts, so pics are likely to scare you away. I have developed a technology to remedy that - Paint Thinner. Nah, I'm just kidding - I didn't invent paint thinner... But it works.

They're pretty rock-solid and easy to work on, so they make good project "boxes."

Congratulations!
I am happy for you!
I'm glad you made the right decision not to go back to get the box!
Imagine what could have happened if she was Lorraine Bobbit... :w00t:
