I came across this rough M70 on ebay and found out a member was the seller. I contacted the member and we negotiated a price to end the sale. He was very honest about the condtion, almost to the point where it seemed like he was trying to scare me away. Upon seeing the radio it was in very rough condition physically and very dirty. Functionally it was fully operational so I saw it had potential. Here is the process I go through when doing a physical restoration:
(1) Remove internal chassis and strip shell of all wiring and speakers
(2) Wash all stripped shell pieces.
(3) Dust speakers with soft bristle paint brush
(4) Sand all parts to prep for paint.
(5) Apply 3 layers of paint to Front case, rear cover, handle, cassette holder, top plate, and external speaker cover screws. Apply 2 coats of clear to handle, rear cover, and external speaker cover screws.
(6) Heat dry all painted components and let cure for 5 days, then polish all painted and chrome finished components.
(7) Put it back together and hope everything works...
I decided to stick with the original silver for this M70 because I love the original color. This particular color is slightly lighter but brighter than the original and really makes it pop. I always seem to learn something new on every restore project I take on and that's part of what I love about it. I am pleased at the outcome...she is no shelf queen but this will be my main carry around "beater" box. Here are pics of the process before, during and after.
